Anyone have a Lego lover at their house?

So, my five year old son is really getting into Legos and I am finding the pieces ALL over the house. Seriously, I cleaned up some from under the couch seconds before I sucked them up in the vacuum. Have any good organization tips? He loves the little Lego people right now & likes to carry them around the house which is part of the problem.

YES, one of my boys (9) is wicked into them... he's always been too... as well as K'nex. THankfully, he's good (for the most part) about putting things away now. :)

My sons best friend loves making lego people and has one of those craft containers with all the little compartments to keep all his bits, and then some of his favorite people.

My son has a lot of lego, but I think its me who likes them more. We generally sort by color for the pieces, and but all the instuction books in sleeves in a folder.

My hubby loved them as a kid and still has most of his collections. I'll ask him later what might be good to store them in. I'm thinking maybe a large tackle box?? They have all those compartments...might be good for organizing.

Love those ideas for the boxes with the compartments...why didn't I think of that??? Plus an album for organizing the booklets. I realized with the first crash of a big airplane that I couldn't put it back together without the instructions (and my son was asking for help) so I don't want to lose those!

oh yeah...we have legos everywhere! I find them constantly and I am pretty sure I have vacuumed some up LOL!

I have two lego lovers in my house, but they are not allowed to bring them out of their room when their sister is up (its a hold over from when she was a baby). But I've found the best thing to get them to pick them up (except in their room... there are always legos all over their floors) is to tell them I'll throw away any I find that aren't in their room. And then you have to follow through on it. I've thrown away a lot of legos.

we have a TON of legos in our house with all three kids loving them immensely! we actually have used the big 3-drawer rubbermaid type drawer sets that you can pick up at Wal-Mart or whatever... that's what we've used for the past few years. It provides a quick & easy put-away solution. I'm not so sure I works for organization AT ALL. it's basically a big dumping ground that makes it hard to sort through and find the pieces you want once the kits get intermingled.

we are actually in the middle of an all-kits rebuild project around here right now. we're rebuilding all of the kits we have, making notes of any and all missing pieces, and then we'll order them from lego, or maybe go to the lego store that's not too far from us. i think i'm going to devise some shelf display/storage system that will let us display completed assembled sets. that way they stay up and unharmed, but are easy to get to when they want to play with them. we'll see how this works.

i've also thought about getting the snapping storage containers that they sell in teh craft aisle for 12x12 scrapbooking supplies. they're big, but not super deep. i thought maybe storing each lego kit in its own separate container might be a possible solution. the pieces and the instructions could then go in together, and they could pull out legos one kit at a time. i've not actuallyl tried this yet though, so i don't know if it will actually work. sounds good in theory???

We have a couple of these cases:

Plus 2 large under-the-bed bins with wheels on them that hold the lego pieces over a large but not so deep area.

Works perfectly, and easy clean up. I realized early on that it was me that wanted the Lego organized, and not the kids - they are happy shuffling through to find the pieces they want.

We keep the instructions in a cardboard magazine box

oh yes! we LOVE LOVE LOVE legos!!! i ended up buying a lego table with draws on the sides and that's where all the masterpieces are made! keeps em in one spot too!

Do you have a photo of it Valorie? I'd love to see what it looks like!

ooohhh yes Val! I'm intrigued by the Lego table :) I have some of the same containers that Heather does (with the Lego man on the front)

Oh and a friendly PSA-Harry Potter, Ninjago, and Pirates of the Carribean lego's are all buy one get one half off at Target this week. I picked up a few Harry Potter sets and put them away for Christmas :) They have an addition to Hogwarts for sale now, we have Hogwarts sitting in Brian's office, an add on for it will be super fun!

My son currently has the base plate with 34 clones stuck to it (his full clone army at the moment). Fits inside and he can even close the lid. I thought it was a great idea!

Edited to add: I realized that this was a bit vague. I meant inside this thing:

My 9 yr old is insane about legos. We just have a couple big bins. But he always has them dumped out sorting for certain tiny pieces. I'm thinkin we'll have to come up with another solution soon!

My 7 year old loves Lego pirate of the carabian is the next on his list so gonna get that for his birthday

We bought this unit at Ikea last summer and it works great. We have one large bin for all the instructions and and 7 small ones for the pieces. They are sorted by colors, with some of the colors combined that aren't as popular. I love that the bins slide out so it is easy to look through them when you need a piece.

My 3 sons love Legos. They end up everywhere no matter what I do. The dog loves to chew on them too...so, the boys are in charge of keeping their "sets" safe. My oldest (11) keeps his on a train table in his room. Works great for him. :)

We also have lots of Lego but our son (6 y/o) is a player and so the Lego-things never stay the same and everywhere you can find pieces of it *eek* We decided to stop buying Lego for now and hope it will go better when he`s older ;)

DS (5) loves lego. We have it all in a large but shallow container as he isn't interested in building the sets, he just wants to make his own stuff.
He also knows that if I find it on the floor then it goes away for a while so he is getting better at keeping it in the box.
The other trick is to lay out a large sheet on the floor. They are allowed to tip the lego on the sheet so it's easier to find things, but it has to STAY on the sheet! Then at the end it's so easy to fold the sheet in half and pour it back into the container.
