I was wondering if this would be good for browsing and posting in the gallery, e-mail, shopping? I don't have a smart phone or laptop and would like to be able to be other places for some of my daily tasks. Thanks for any opinions! :)

I took a long hard look at the Fire, until I saw it didn't have 3G. That was a big deal to me, as I wanted to be able to use places other than my house. However, if that's not a big deal to you, I think it would be great for that without going for the high price of the iPad. My understanding is that it's meant to be more of a tablet than an e-reader.

I looked in to it because I thought if I was going to get an e-reader I may as well have the fun one... lol! Except that they are not shipping them to Canada right now.... boooooooooooooo!!!! lol!

Thanks for asking this. I am looking at one for my husband for Christmas. He is wanting an ipad for doing power point and etc... with his work and I was wondering if you could do stuff like that also on the Fire. Hopefully more will chime in.

We are getting 2 of them for our (almost 10 and 8 years olds) boys. They have Ds's, they have ipod touches and am not spending over $1000 to get them 2 ipads (DH has one). They are not responsible enough for that. They are allowed to have e-readers at school and a lot of the kids in their class have Nooks so hopefully this will be good!!!

I hate to admit it but I don't understand why you couldn't use it anywhere but home? I know I should know what it means if it has or doesn't have 3G since I have a smartphone but I just figured that since it says you can access the internet & email you could do that anywhere you were using the fire.

You can use it anywhere you can get wireless internet access - so if you're, say, at Starbucks, you could use it there. Specifically, I wanted to be able to use it while we were camping in our RV, so for me that meant having 3G capability like the iPad has.

I really haven't used the 3G on my iPad yet. I just use my phone if I'm somewhere and need to access the internet, and use it with wifi elsewhere.

I bought 3 Kindle Fires for gifts this year. We're going to open up the one for my son in Texas so I can buy some comics and books to put on it before I send it...I can't wait to play with it a bit!! I think the wifi capabilities will be just fine for us. The price is just too good to pass up.

If you have an iPhone, you can use that as a Hot Spot for the Wi-Fi versioned iPad... rather than spending a couple hundred more dollars for the 3G versioned iPad ;) It's what I do when we're in our RV and we love it!

I have an Android phone and have to pay extra for the hot spot capability. It's substantially more $$ than the monthly cost of the 3G capability with the iPad. So for me, even though the 3G iPad is a bigger investment up front, in the long run I think it will be better for me.

I would check to see if the PowerPoint app is available for it. I'm pretty sure they intend it to be for entertainment mostly, so I'd be surprised if there is an app for work related items. The only software you can put on it are the Apps from the Kindle Store. Apps from Apple store will not work.

I also chose to get the 3G version of my iPad Julie. I figure when I need it, it's there. I think the cost for using it is cheaper than using my phone as a mobile hotspot too. I weighed all that out when I made my purchase, and I just decided to go ahead and get it because I can't add it later.

Karen, I have a Kindle Fire. I think it would be good for what you are looking to use it for. I have an android phone (Droid X) and the Fire is extremely similar in most every area. Many of us do the things you've asked about from our smartphones. The Fire gives you those capabilities on a bigger screen which is very nice. And it seems to be very easy to download, install, and use apps, books, tv shows, movies, or music on. Because it has a dual processor you can multi task on it too.

Julie, you can tether your phone and device together too. That is usually less expensive than creating a wifi hot spot. However, if I were in your shoes and wished to use the device away from home or hot spots a lot I'd probably hold out for the iPad too.

Thanks Debra and Rebecca. I think the ipad will be the way to go for him. I just would have liked to find something a little cheaper. I guess that's how it goes though. He definitely deserves it.

I have a question about the kindle fire too. If i decided to get this KFire how much is the cost after I get it? I know the KFire is going around $200 at Amazon. Is it going to be like a cell phone. Where you pay monthly? I would like to get it for reading and email. But I dont want to pay a monthly charge just for it to work. Or do i just pay for the books? and are they expensive?

You only pay the one time fee, but books do cost money. There are a lot of free books available for the Kindle though, or relatively inexpensive ones. I download free or $0.99 ones all the time. It's only wifi, so you have to be able to connect to the internet to download the books. You get a month of Amazon Prime free where you can borrow books for free too and stream free movies and tv shows. You can choose to buy a year of it if you like it. You can do your email on it, download free or paid for apps (from the android market), play games, read, watch movies, etc...

My husband got his the other day for his birthday and he's loving it. He's going to put some of his apps that are on his phone onto it because it's easier for him to see them on the Fire. Our other Kindle accounts (we both have Kindles) are linked with this, so any books we've purchased are available for him to download and read. He also gets USA Today (for the sports page) on his Kindle (he pays monthly for it).
