I ran out of hard drive space on my Mac so I bought a Seagate EHD about six months ago from Costco. I moved my entire digi stash onto it and I store all of my digi supplies there.

I think it has died already! Halfway through creating a page last night I couldn't access any of my digital supplies. :hissy And my IT help desk person (hubby) tried to help last night and even used this special SATA connector to access the drive directly but it didn't help. He has concluded that it is toast.

Does anyone have a portable EHD they recommend? I need something that is reliable and that I can actually physically move around without it breaking on me. I scrap on a Macbook and I'm constantly moving around the house with it.

TIA!

I have heard tons of bad things about Seagates drives... i think that's why they are always the cheapest. I have had four Western Digital Passports and have loved every single one of them! I take it to work with me a lot, so I throw it in my purse and bonk it around a lot and it still fires up every time. I'm 90% sure they have a Mac version of these too...

Sorry about your dying though. boo!

I've had great luck with my Seagate Free Agent drives. One I actually outgrew, the next one lived a really long life. Then I replaced with a 1TB. My boss had no problem getting all the data off of my dead one though.

Oh no. So sorry to see that. :( I have a dead Western Digital one that I had used with my laptop. I'm hoping that it will magically spring back to life somehow. The WD one I have now has been good. But I don't move it around, so I am no help there.

Just hugs for your frustration.

I hate to say it, but I think it is luck of the draw. It seems like I have heard tons of horror stories with WD. I haven't heard as much about Seagate. In fact both of my Seagate's are going strong. but as I said, it is luck of the draw whether you get a good one or one that dies on you. Sorry yours died that is so horrible!

Thanks ladies. I have my stuff backed up with Crashplan so I know I can get it back, I'm just annoyed by the hassle. I think I might try this one by Iomega. I only have two usb slots so the fact I can use firewire to connect to it will be better for me. And it has a rubber case for protection.

i've always used Western Digitals... and Backblaze i love.

I have a 2tb Lacie that I love. A friend of mine recommended it....her dh is an IT guy. :)

I have a new WD portable that I'm using for the first time tonight... hopefully I have good luck with it. Seagate was the brand HD I had in lappy originally that died after 1yr so they're banned in my house forever lol

I think it is luck of the draw. I have two WDs, plus a networkable SimpleShare, and haven't had any problems with any of them. But I know of others that hate WD, so I don't know what to tell you :)

I have had a HP Simple Save for over a year, and it's never given me any problems
(actually, I need another one lol)

Well I have good news. Seagate Customer Service was wonderful and they are sending me a replacement at no cost. They want me to take the adapter/cord out of the new one and use it with my old one to see if that is the problem. If not, then I keep the new one entirely and recover my data from Crashplan onto it. So I'm impressed with their Customer Service.

For real? I'm so happy for you! I was just going to come in here and say I feel your pain with seagate, as I have had my 1TB for less than a year and it just crashed over the weekend. Had no idea what I was going to do to get everything back, but I am pretty stoked to hear your experience! I feel like there IS hope now!

Oh no, Carolee!! Wahhhhh! But yay for wonderful customer service! So happy to read that!!

Sadly it really is hit or miss and just a matter of time with EHDs I think. I have two 2 TB Western Digitals and so far so good. BUT I have 2 b/c I'm anticipating one will poop sooner or later. So they are essentially like a RAID back-up setup. And I backup in other ways as well, lol!!

Really happy they are sending a replacement! That's good news!!

Oh gosh, how frustrating... I'm sorry.... Good thing you've got it backed up else where! :-)

I highly recommend the Iomega. I've had my Iomega 3TB for about 2-3 years and never once have had any problems with it and believe it or not I've never run out of space. But, I do burn my scrapped pics to CD on a regular bassis, so that helps on saving space.

Oh, and in case any one is interested in restoring a corrupt EHD, HDD Mechanics (at http://recoverymechanic.com/hard_drive_recovery/hdd_mechanic.php) works well. A few years back our hard drive became corrupt and the dh was able to restore pretty much everything. Typically, if it's a corrupt HD or EHD (and not mechanical), this software will restore. This is what prompted us though to get a couple EHD. LOL!

I have a WD TB that I've had for years. Absolutely no problem with it at all (knock on wood).

I've had other WD too and never had problems with those...my boys and husband have them too...no problems.
