I was just on the way to the Mall to meet up with a woman I mentor and had several errands to make first. When I got to the temporary library we now have, a librarian was checking the door locks. I also noticed a helicopter hovering which usually means a fugitive at large. As I started to dash in, the librarian said we might have to enforce 'shelter in place' any moment because there's an active shooter in the building across the street from the mall about 1.5 miles away. Gulp. Our financial advisor is in that building! But so is the Capital/Gazette newspaper office which was one of the scenes of attack. A newspaper office!
So I returned my books and got my one hold and got home as quick as I could. I texted my friend to cancel and because I had given myself an hour for those chores, she hadn't left. The 1st newsflash on my phone was the British paper, The Guardian! I spent he next hour or two watching the tv news coverage. God bless our 1st responders who got to the scene in 60 SECONDS! Sadly, a gunman can harm a lot of people in that time. 5 dead at the last news I heard with injuries to others including some others critically injured.
This is no way as bad as other incidents but it's the first one here. God willing it's the last. We are blessed to be amongst so many police and other agencies who responded so quickly. Also, last week was a test practice on such an event. If you know people in your local government, do strongly encourage them to do this kind of preparedness training. We all think it can't happen here, until it does.
btw, our temporary library is in the building that used to hold the old Capital/Gazette newspaper office. Thank God that's as close as I got.
