I was reading through the AJ thread and I noticed there was a question on process or not sure where to start. I thought it would be great to share a few things that I do on my pages and maybe a few videos.
I think once you get an idea whether it be a background paper or an element or a word art a flow starts to evolve. Or even just the theme or name of a kit can bring it together.
I class ourselves as visual art journallers. We create products to be used in a visual/art journal page that help to tell what is going on in your page or the feelings/message you want to convey. In our kits we sometimes roll with a theme and a lot of the time there are random stuff that has no connection to the theme at all but it may visually look cool on a page.
Random is great
There are no right or wrongs in art journaling it's your creativity based on what inspires you.
My process usually:
Starts with a number of things. It could start with a word prompt like I followed with the M3 December challenge I used the word Transform. My entire page came together very quickly, once I chose that word I searched through the elements and an idea came immediately.
Sometimes it is more personal than that and it could be emotional feelings. And I need to get it off my chest.
Sorrow
Ideas on making a start and putting it together.
1. So things I think of when I want to create a page but I don't have an emotional connection. I will go with either a word prompt or a quote about something, at this point I don't know the quote but I know what I want it to be about e.g. New beginnings, Happier times, travel and distance etc. This will then get me organised into a theme of sorts.
2. Choose my background paper, usually whatever I recently loved but didn't have time to use or create.
3. Choose elements that I think will best fit my theme/prompt/emotion and colours I want to use. I love Minty colours they will usually pop on my page somewhere. I tend to play around with my elements a lot using blending modes, cut bits off here or there, clip things to them all sorts of things. I usually start with a HERO element as my focal point and work around it.
4. Add paint, stamps, borders, and what not to my page.
5. Add my word art/Quote/Journalling.
6. Add any final touches to my page, sometimes just a little dot of paint somewhere to finish it.
ART JOURNALLING doesn't have a right and wrong, it is what it is when you feel it is finished. You will know that. And sometimes you will actually hate it....but don't delete it. I have a lot like that that I cringe at but I also was at a different place when I did it.
So here are a few videos that we made, they are a bit older now but it may help as a visual guide to make a start.

Oh and also..I don't stick to the above steps it is just a guide for you if you are having troubles making a start.
These are some of my favourite pages.
And I love to draw so this is one of my hybrid pages that isn't so grungie. An illustration with a quote.
So I hope that this has helped someone to make a connection or initiate the beginnings of an awesome page that has come entirely from your own creativity
