almost a new computer = new back up?

I'm so proud of myself and feel like I have a new computer! You might recall my mentioning my computer was in the repair shop last weekend and the weekend before. That was for a couple of things. I don't know that anyone wants the entire saga, so I'll try to summarize the key points. :D

1. My iMac required a new internal drive.
2. Because of a different issue, I had to to reformat that new drive and reinstall the OS and because I was impatient and didn't want to take it in to the shop for a 3rd time, I read some how-to articles and did it myself, and as the Apple tech on the phone yesterday suspected, it solved the problem!

I'm so excited to start anew. It nearly feels like a brand new computer.

Alas, the Backblaze software seems to think it IS a new computer and I can't just reconnect with all my data they have backed up. I would have to start backing it up all over again. That's 3 Tb of data! It will take months.

But maybe this is one of those blessings in disguise. Because I've been with Backblaze a long time and because of the hassle of uploading I never wanted to try another service, but I know there's a better one (I forget the name -- I need to go look it up) that saves what we back up, even if we lose it from our own computer (unlike Backblaze). My husband also suggests I consider Dropbox.

Just wanted to share. And TLP was the first place I visited and saved a password for on my "new" computer. :D Now to continue setting things up . . .

Thanks Courtney @bestcee
I was trying to transfer the backup state and after a few emails back and forth with customer support, the guy said I'll just have to start over. Maybe if I decide I'd rather not start over with another company I'll push them more about this.

CrashPlan has a setting where you tell it how long to save things after they're deleted, and you can set it to "Never". I don't remember if that's the default, but it's how mine is set. This is why I went with CrashPlan over BackBlaze.

Hooray for almost a new computer! I love that you were able to fix it yourself too. Way to go! Good luck with the backing up search. I hope you find a solution that doesn't take too long or too many hassles.

I'm doing some reading about the possibilities this morning. Yes Lorry @lorryfach that is one of the first things that had me thinking about switching to CrashPlan (I just wasn't confident I remembered the name last night) and I'm reading about them right now.

If I were a quick decision maker, I'd be already uploading my stuff to Crash Plan, but I'm not. And in this kind of situation particularly -- where once I'm invested in it, it will be hard to change -- I want to be careful.

Thanks @Karen It was definitely a confidence-booster doing it myself, not to mention easier than dragging it back into the shop and waiting for them to do it! And I'm enjoying how well my computer is working again, now that it has been freed of clutter. :)

That's a bummer! Good luck deciding on a site. I totally get what you mean, I loosely explore other backups, but since mine is good, I don't want to switch because of the time invested.

Congratulations on the 'new to you' computer! or as the Mercedes dealers say 'previously driven'. I've upgraded the memory on my iMac but never the driver.. Where do they fit all those things with the slim design.... It's so great not to have to take an iMac into the store. I can't do it myself and while my dh is great to help me lug it in it's still a royal pain imho. I would much rather sit for a day with tech support - always nice guys who seem to enjoy a challenge.

Did you install El Capitan? my dh has it but somehow I've not bothered yet though usually I do about a month or say after he does. (Let him find any glitches before I have to.) I'm also curious to know how old your iMac is because we have an old 24" that I know could be working again...if something were done for it. I keep trying to get to the local Apple Slice group but for about a year or two the times have never worked for me.

Finally, though I have never had to use it, my dh has had to use Crashplan when he poured coffee then water into a MacBookPro at different times. He said it was quick and easy to get his data back. I do know that the amount of data he has doesn't even come close to what I have though with photos and digi supplies.

Thanks Maureen! Yes, I installed El Capitan, and it wasn't the first time. I'd already been using before I got the new hard drive. It's running fine on my mid-2011 27" iMac.
