This tutorial is written for Affinity Studio. Affinity have added a lovely quicker simpler method for this technique in the new Affinity Studio. If you are using Affinity 2, then please check out this tutorial here.
Studio Kaleidoscope has a fun string with hearts on it and a bead alpha in her new February BYOC collection - All Kinds of Love. I threaded the beads onto the string for the title on my layout.
For this technique you want be using the Pixel Studio.
1. Place the beads on top of the string.
2. Select the string element in the layers panel
4. Go to the Menu and choose Pixel - Pixel Selection - From Layer
A flashing dotted line will now be visible around the string element
5. Select the first bead you want to thread on the layers panel
6. Click on the eraser tool
7. The default brush is a little bigger than I like it to be for elements this small. Adjust the brush width via the context toolbar (I've set mine to 25px)
8. Paint out the part of the bead that will be underneath the string
The Affinity Assistant will now give you a message saying that it's created a mask layer for you to keep your edits non-destructible.
9. Continue painting out the part of the bead that is to be hidden by the string.
10. Repeat steps 5 to 9 with the remaining beads
11. Goto the Menu and Select - Deselect (or use the shortcut key ctrl d)
12. Remember to group the string and beads together on the layers panel so they stay together is you move the string later.
13. Because your edits are done using a mask, you can change them later if you choose to by editing the mask layer.
