One of my favourite childhood traditions in the lead up to Christmas was the Advent Calendar. It still fills me with excitement every year. There are so many different types of advent calendars.

In this one Monica has made a hybrid advent calendar with cardboard pockets.

Sarah made hybrid activity cards that she hung with bull dog clips, click here to read her blog post all about it.

My mum sewed a big wall hanging with pockets in it, and there was a gift for each of us in each daily pocket. This is a tradition I have continued with my children. We have put many different things in advent pockets including:
  • piece for a 24 piece jigsaw to slowly build
  • duplo blocks
  • Barbie clothes
  • codes and puzzles
  • tags with daily acts of kindness on
  • the items needed to make a finger puppet nativity scene
  • gift tags to colour
  • the items needed to make tree decorations
  • Christmas themed colouring pages (Sahin Designs has some super ones in the store here.)
Perhaps you have some more cool ideas.

Don't sew, but want fabric pockets? Check out the huge pockets in this super hybrid advent calendar Margaret (londoncuppa) made using a shop bought shoe organiser for the pockets (she wrote about how she made it in this post here.)

Lori (lcpereyra) created hybrid tags that she added to little burlap sacks hung on twine.

Perhaps you'd like to count down the days of advent, but without the gift pockets.

Dawn has created a fabulous hybrid banner where each card has a number on one side, and then once turned over reveals a photo on the other.

Before advent calendars filled with shaped chocolates filled our stores, the shelves were filled with picture advents, with little doors in to open each day and a different picture behind each door. I've started creating one of these using the new DYD products and the Holly and Pine Christmas Countdown Template by Scrapping with Liz. I need to get it printed as I can't print this at home.

To cut the doors I will use a craft knife and cut 3 sides of each door leaving a tiny gap at the corners that can be broken when the recipient opens the door.

For the pictures behind the doors I have used photos from past Christmases. I've used the same template, but deleted all the layers except the photo layers, and removed the shadows.

I will apply glue to the white spaces around the photos (being careful not to get it on the photos) and then stick the front on top (after cutting the doors obviously). Then each day a door can be opened to reveal a journey through time.

Is making an advent calendar a new thing for you, or do you make one every year? I'd love to see what you are making/preparing for this Advent.

So many great advent calendars, love the inspiration here. Thank you Angela for putting it together! I love your calendar, I also had those paper calendar when I was a kid. I think I need to make a calendar this year, hmmm need to figure out what type I want.

I love your photo calendar Angela. What a fun idea.

I made a candy cane advent calendar when I got married to match the one I had growing up. I’ve also reused the Lego advent boxes to make my own with little prizes.
