Anyone else do advent calendars?
We will have 3 this year. Sigh. Chocolate, toy, and religious.
On the bright side, we ended up with 3 of the chocolate ones, so 1 is all mine!
The toy one is just little lego guys. Last year, the last two years we skipped the chocolate ones, and just did the Lego advent calendars. This year we decided it would be cheaper to make our own!
So here it is December 1, almost 2pm...and I'm cutting out the pieces to assemble the Lego calendar. Whoops!

I always had them for my kids. I was going to try to make Asher one, but he's not here every day, so I nixed that idea. I have an Advent Owl that I put out today and when he's here, he changes it every day. When he's not, I change it.

I love them! This is the first year I made one for my daughter (she 2.5). Before she was born, I used to make them for my nieces.
This is a page I made with it

(it has 31 days, because Santa comes here on New Year's Eve!)

I tried an Advent Calendar last year (now it is just Hubby and I here) but we did not like the candy so this year I actually bought a little barn with "days til Christmas". It looks so cute since I am decorating in the theme "old fashion christmas".

We're not religious and don't do advent calendars. However, I have done things like write holiday activities on slips of paper, fold them up and put them in a jar, and then the kids draw one out each day or whenever they want to.

the kids each have an advent calendar - his is Lego and hers is skincare/makeup. i have had plans in past years to make one with fun things to do and candy in it, but it never came together, so i just plan the fun things on little slips of paper and scatter them through our december calendar. :)

Last year was our first year without a Lego Advent Calendar.... they both got Trader Joe's Chocolate Advent Calendars, Clara got a 12 days of make up box from Ulta and Graham got the Cards Against Humanity Saves America set (5 mailings over the month of December).

This year Clara asked for no candy, so she's getting a 12 days of socks set from Target and Graham is away at college... I'll see if I can find anything interesting for him once he's home after finals.

We have a religious one that is the Nativity scene (no goodies but the privilege of putting up the piece for the day). I am also doing a countdown to Christmas that I posted in the Gallery. That one is for me and it is pretty. We have never done one with gifts or surprises.

We have done an Advent calendar since DD was little. She and I painted a cardboard box advent calendar from, like, Michael's; then I decoupaged (using Hodge Podge) the numbers to the drawers. Each day had little treats, and once she was old enough I came up with little LEGO sets she could build. That lasted for a few years. Then we started getting the LEGO Advent calendar--usually the City theme. This is our first year doing two LEGO calendars. DD got the Friends, which is a daily LEGO ornament, and DS got the Star Wars one. DD has a little Christmas tree for her room, so I'm hoping the Friends' LEGO ornaments fit on that. The reason we did two was because DD goes to school so much earlier than DS this year, so I wanted him to do his calendar in the morning, before school, and DD can do it after school. It'll let me have a little moment each day with them.

@cinderella Yours is much easier than the paper one I'm making. Which won't be done because my Silhouette blade died, and no one around here has one. Seriously! What's up with that?!?!

but we did not like the candy
I don't usually either. Day 1 of the Ikea calender - not too bad. Someday, I want to buy one of those fancy Lindt ball ones!

I have done things like write holiday activities on slips of paper,
Oh! I love this idea. I don't think I can add another thing without getting overwhelmed though.

hey both got Trader Joe's Chocolate Advent Calendars
Oh! Is that good chocolate?

I always have good intentions, but you know what they say about those..
They are littered about with the rest of the lost projects that moms have on their list to do? :giggle

OH! That sounds awesome!

We've had the Star Wars and City/Friends ones before. One year we had all three....And there's only 1 kid and 2 adults in this house....
:whistle

You're in good company. :) We didn't love the City one (looked like a lot of fig repeats of year's past or at least REALLY similar figs), or we probably would have had all 3 this year. I mean, if you're getting more than one, then why stop at two? :giggle

. . .

Most of the items on the slips of paper are things you probably will be doing anyway. For example, my daughter pulled one out of the tin last night and it was "make fudge." Note: We did not have the ingredients so we couldn't make fudge. She wasn't disappointed because she just recently, at Thanksgiving, had fudge. But there was a reminder: be prepared. :D

We typically do but I'm a little late. My kids usually do the chocolate one. Gotta stop by the store and grab a couple today.
