Adobe Elements or PaintShop Pro?

I have used Photoshop Elements 3 for years. I purchased an Epson Stylus Photo 1400 printer. Epson included Elements 6 with the printer, which is the software it says is required to use the printer. I installed Elements 6. I like a lot of the features in the upgrade from Elements 3 but it crashed a lot. I used Elements 3 for most of my projects and then used Elements 6 to refine shadows, bevels, etc., and to print. Elements 6 still crashed but I could get through it. Recently Elements 3 began having lots of problems so I uninstalled Elements 3. 6 kept crashing so I uninstalled and reinstalled 6; still crashed so uninstalled 6 as well as the printer and reinstalled both. 6 still crashed so uninstalled using instructions from John Ellis and Adobe Tech Notes to uninstall registers, etc. Reinstalled 6 and it is still crashing.

I'm thinking of going to a new software program. My husband hates Adobe programs because they don't "clean up" after themselves and files are left all over the place. I loved Elements 3 but would like to have the tools and refinements of programs developed more recently. We've searched sites and many say that Elements 6,7 and 8 have big crash problems. I'd like to know more about Paint Shop Pro --- does it have the crash problems of Adobe Elements; does it have the tools of Elements for editing photos and creating scrapbook pages?

Any thoughts and comments would be greatly appreciated!

hi suzie,

i`m sorry that you have so many troubles with Photoshop... i used to work with Elements 2 years ago before i started to used CS and I really loved it. I never had any crashs... i`m not sure if there is maybe a problem with the version I remember that i had a lot of troubles with CS3...
maybe you can find some help here in this forum http://forums.adobe.com or you try to contact Adobe
I`ve never used PSP so i can`t help you with that:sorry

PSP is extremely flexible (i've only used that for the many yrs i've been doing this); however, i would recommend giving Elements another try, just the most recent version... while you can do a lot in PSP, there's some you can't do like use many of the actions on the market.

suzie, when my elements starting crashing all over the place (it was PSE 5), it was actually because i didn't have quite enough power in my computer to do all of the rendering and everything that it was trying to do. since the computer upgrade, it has been smooth sailing, and i think my pse 6 has NEVER crashed. any possibility your system may be being taxed too much?

This is typically the culprit. I had crash problems (not with Elements but with CS) but once I upgraded my RAM and made sure my program had enough RAM assigned to it (under Performance in your program settings) my problems have gone away. You might also not have enough room on your scratch disk.

I've owned three versions. 2.0, 4.0 and 7.0 and never have had that problem. But as the others have said you probably don't have enough space to run the program the way it needs too. Good luck!

I had crash problems with 5 too. And it was definitely the power my computer had. It was just not enough memory. But since I've gotten my laptop...not a problem.

I have no experience with PSP, but, I have PSE7 and I really love it. I don't have problems with it crashing, and I'm so happy that there are quite a few actions out there that can be used with PSE.

I had so many problems with PSE7 crashing that I finally gave up on it. I've tried PSP & then I discovered Digital Scrapbook Artist 2 on the web. After researching it, I decided to give it a try since you can download a trial version & the cost of the program is only $50. I love it!! It does everything the CS programs pretty much do, lots of tutorials on the web & the learning curve is easy. The program is out of the UK & any questions I've had are answered very quickly. I wouldn't trade this program for anything!

patty that's really good to know! i've had several people ask me for inexpensive alternatives that have the ability to make good quality pages.

I used psp until January of this year and then switched to Elements 8. I really loved psp but now that I've used elements I would never go back. I just enjoy my actions way too much and using templates is way easier with elements. I hope you are able to figure out why it's crashing and make it work better for you.

Love my PSP, but like Amy said... the actions out there don't work. Doesn't mean you can't create the same things yourself... you just can't buy it all nice and canned. :)
