Jenn - you wanted a more detailed review once I finished this book - I honestly can't recommend it enough if you can handle the subject matter. Short version, without giving away spoilers, there's a lot of physical and sexual abuse contained in this book. And it's brutal, and graphic. But despite this, I can't get over how beautiful the entire story as a whole was. I can't let the difficult passages take over the storyline as a whole. So if you're okay with some harsh portions, you really do need to read this book. This is my Goodreads review (5 stars):

This will forever fall into my "all-time favorites" category. It claims to be about four friends, but really, it's about one man, Jude, and his life, and his friends. It was very much a yin & yang story for me - a beautifully written book about an incredibly ugly subject. Happiness and Sorrow. Love and Hate. Kindness and Cruelty. Hope and Despair. Good and Evil. Friendship and Loathing. It's brutal. It's graphic. It broke my heart in places. But for all the brutality in this book, the beauty of it shines so bright, and so vividly, you can't help but push the ugliness aside and simply enjoy the novel and the characters. And it is the greatest character novel I've read in a very long time, if ever. It's not a light read, but I did find it to be an easy read, despite the subject and it's length. I found myself losing hours while reading it, and wondering where they went afterwards. It's a difficult novel to recommend as much as I want to - if you want happy, this isn't it. But if you want an amazing book that will stick with you for a very long time, read this. I expected to be sad and depressed once I finished this book, but surprisingly, I was left with the Happiness, the Love, the Kindness, the Hope, the Good, and the Friendship. I can't recommend this one enough.

I'm near the end of that novel right now, Julie and everything you've said here is spot on. Those who can cope with difficult subject matter must read this book. It's one that will stay with you long after reading and that you will probably want to read again.

Ladies thank you! It has been a long long time since I've enjoyed a good book. And with limited time to read, I want the one or two books I do pick to be awesome. I think this fits the bill. I can handle darker subjects (either movie or book) quite well.

Julie I am wait listed at the library, but will buy it if I don't receive it during my winter break between semesters. Looking forward to this read. Again THANK YOU.

It seems like the subject is following me around... the sexual abuse thing.... and I don't think I am in the right time to read it, but after reading your review, I will keep it in my list for after my life changing decisions are made (probably January I will know if I have to move house or not, Sarita will be going to Uni or not, and other very very big time things I need to decide on)

Right now.. I stopped a couple of books because the subject came up, and day before yesterday I started watching Flesh & Bone in Amazon video.... I also had to leave it...
will keep the book in my to read list :)

Aww Cynthia I hope things get better for you soon my friend. You are too sweet and fun to be having so many problems. Hugs to you!!

I'm glad to know that this is such a good book. I have it on my to-read list and am waiting for a library copy.

I rec'd it the other day from the library!!! Yay! & Last night, around midnight, I finished my last exam... woo-hoo! I got to start it bf passing out from exhaustion .... it's already got me reeled in after 2 chapters. And I just realized I read her first book ... The People in the Trees. I didn't realize it was the same author until now.

Did you enjoy "The People in the Trees", Jenn? I haven't read that one yet. So glad to hear your finals are behind you, yay, now you can enjoy a bit of a respite!

it was odd ... I guess that's the best way to describe it. Def'tly a unique story. and she's deftly a talented writer. i like to read unusual things though so i did enjoy it.
