My 17 year old, senior in high school son just asked last night if I would make him a recipe book of easy recipes for when he goes off to college. How could I say no??

Anyway, first thought was to make a shutterfly book, but then I realized that a binder would be more practical. My thought is that his needs will change over the years and a binder allows him to add and subtract recipes. I was thinking that I would have 4x6 recipe cards printed. I love the size of the 6x8 Sn@p albums, but every Sn@p binder I have seen hasn't been very kitchen friendly... they've either been chipboard or fabric. The vinyl, office supply store version is just slightly smaller (only 5.5 in wide), and doesn't have a multi-slot option. Are there other lines you suggest? Has anyone done a similar project? And finally... I would love any dorm friendly recipes if you have them (assuming only microwaves allowed).

Thanks!

Scrapbook.com has a faux leather 6x8 Snap binder in dark brown or black for just under $21.00. Becky Higgens also has a faux black 6x8 for $19.00.

Just thinking out loud here and this may be a completely silly idea...but I'm wondering if you could take one of the chipboard binders and cover it in contact paper, both on the outside and inside to make it a bit more kitchen friendly? Or getting the rings and using one of those heavy plastic place mats cut to size, using a bone folder to make the creases for the spine? Or covering the chipboard album with the plastic place mat on all sides?

I'll have to get back to you on recipes...I'm not a big microwave cooker unless it's a frozen meal LOL

i have nver pinted one, other then pin-feed 3x5 text ones on the atari. so i at just starting

Thanks @bbymks5 and @scrappyjedi! I have only seen the chipboard and cloth covered ones in the stores. I think the faux leather will work, plus it'll be a good look for the boy. I'm glad I can stick with sn@p as I use them for other projects and have lots of inserts already. The contact paper is a good idea... but I am sooooo not crafty when it comes to actual, non-digital things... lol!

I totally forgot about eggs in the microwave! I've done that a couple times when I'm in a rush!

What would be nice is if they allowed a convection oven or an electric pressure cooker...he could at least have leftovers that way, if he doesn't mind them.

thank you, 4x6 i familur with. 5x7 tink writting tablet, 6x8 i cant picture

You could also do them 6x8 with an image or the pertinent photo on the top and directions below etc. Seeing those photos makes those recipes really doable for the novice chef I think. Great site Tracie! I'm going to send it to my granddaughter in Ireland. I think they have a microwave in their shared flat.

This is brilliant! I'm wondering if I should start collating some favourites for my boy in this format now (um, even though he's not yet a year old!).

If you print 4x6 cards st Persnickety Prints, they are completely waterproof and can be rinsed under the spigot if necessary! I print all of mine there. I have a wooden box that I got at Michaels to put them in. For the dividers, I used an old retired set from SWL. It's almost full now, so I did just recently buy a small binder at my little, local craft store. When I get home, I'll see if I can figure out who made it.

Is he allowed a crock pot? My friend's daughter can have them but only if a human is in attendance at all times it is on. (dorm monitors confiscate if on and unattended). They are great for those with no fridge. She does sort of an all week end stew in one reducing her food costs alot.

She has laminated recipe cardish things on snap close ring that hangs from an upper cabinet nob. Printed them, punched one slightly larger than normal hole in a corner, lamination, then punched one hole in same spot with smaller punch and then used dollar tree snap ring to keep em corralled.

Definitely look up a microwave brownie in a coffee cup recipe! My sister made me one last year & it was delicious. Not a meal, but you need desserts too!

Here's a pic of my wooden box with my recipes in it. The binder, which I haven't used yet is from BoBunny. It comes with the dividers. Some are full page and some fit 2 4x6 cards.

I live the idea of 6x8 size for recipe binders.

I have a 6x8 binder I grabbed from target, that will at the very least be wipeable.

I am in the midst of making my own type of menu planning binder. I had been stalled trying to decide which categories I would use. I have finally landed on doing it by type of meat, because that seems to make the most sense for how I look for recipes and meal plan. So my next step is to make lists of recipes, and then print those recipes out. There is a blog post on TLP blog about a recipe binder project....
