I have been working in the montessori for two weeks.. I am dead tired!! LOL!! love the kids.. somehow, the principal expects me to teach and do some day care job too from 9am -630pm. The working hours are way too long for me.. :(

What is the labour law in your country?

Wow those are long hours!! I have no clue to be honest if we have a labour law... I work 8 hours a day at daycare and always dead tired too!!

But besides the fact you're tired... Do you like the new job?? :D

Li Li, unfortunately, that is the the standard working hours (for a full-time job) & expectations. In our regions ie.

But I doubt you are expected to teach & do day care at the same time, right? But again, when you teach, you do have to look after the kids' too = making sure everything is in order. So that is your "day care job".

It's only your 2nd week. So naturally you will still be dead tire. Once you've gotten the hang of it, it'll be ok. So just hang on and enjoy the kids' company.

Lol!! I have to wait for the last child to go home . So if the parents come at 730pm , by the time I reached home it's 830pm. There is no way one has time to prepare for next day when the time is spent on taking care of 20kids including changing , showering , outdoor activities with the kids.

8hours is the norm. And I don't have lunch break. It's non stop 9-10 hours -> that's not norm

Yes.. Love it :) . Kids are darn cute and smart .. Lol!! Do you teach?

Waiting for last child to go home is also the norm.

But no lunch break?? That is definitely not the norm. But again, you are allowed to eat your lunch, right?

As you are not a full-fledged teacher, so you have no choice but to do the misc things you mentioned. That also means helping out during the lunch time = no lunch break. Well, that is how it works over here, ie.

You shud let your your Principal/supervisor know if you're having difficulty preparing for your class, regardless of the reason.

An hour lunch break is the norm. even if one is doing day care that doesn't equal = slave!! Lol!!

That's the thing about the region labour law = if one isn't familiar with it, then they are taken advantage of. Just wanted to know what are the practices ..

I did inform the Principal that I won't be able to manage preparations and 20kids and reports. :) .

20kids 2 years -6 years old that is a handful.

I have worked from 10am - 10pm in a company . And I come in late the next day because the job scope is intense.. So there is a buffer time for the body to recuperate..

Besides all the tiredness , kids are fun to be with.. And they do the craziest thing every day . Lol!!

Totally agreed & understood.

So to protect ourselves, we have to know & understand our own labour laws. Then compare it with the employment terms to see if it sounds "reasonable" to you.

Unfortunately, again, you cannot compare a day care centre to a private enterprise. Their employment terms & working environment are very very very the different.

That's why my friends are shocked that I am willing to work in a day care ctr when I retire. Becos of the long working hours and tedious work. It's just like being a nurse and a school teacher. It is a calling/passion, more than a job-job.

Well teaching is a big word li li... I work at daycare and we do teach the kids a whole lot :)

My son is working 56 hours this week on his feet in the kitchen, and he's only 17.

my husband goes in at 5:30 in the morning, and on a GOOD day he leaves by 5:30 in the evening. Usually he doesn't leave until much later, often not getting home until 8:30-10:00 at night. He gets no overtime. These are just the expectations - that he does the job until it's done.
i guess it depends on the job and what they outline as the expectations when you sign on. If they have set those as the expectations from the start, then that is what is expected. Some places expect 4 hours of work (like my job at the school), and some places expect significantly more (like my husbands). Every job is different.

That being said, I can completely feel for you! Getting back into the routine of a long work day after not having had such long days for a while is EXHAUSTING! Give it time. You'll find your rhythm and groove. Your stamina will build. And before you know it, you'll be doing this like a breeze!!

That's a long day. And to be honest, kids are fun but they sometimes tend to make the day seem double the length it is. Kids have so much energy because they drain all the adults! :P

I think it depends on the job. For me, I work 7-3:30, and I leave at 3:30. If I don't, then I will miss the bus dropping off my kids. If I put in overtime, I don't get paid. I think my time is worth more, so I don't go over my 40 hours. DH works from 7:30 to 4:30... sometimes he will be home early for taking a short lunch. Other time, he will be working late - till 6, 7, 8 or 9, depending on the job assignments. He gets OT, so that is better for us.

I hope you get lunch, and a little respite to get a little energy back. I'm glad to hear that you talked with your principal though! In a few weeks, you'll get used to the schedule. Hugs for the long days!
