Avoiding food waste ... and making something yummy!

It's sugar and strawberries. Cook them down on the stove, and boom! So easy!

I make my own maple syrup too.
that is SO cool & impressive! do you tap the trees yourself? or where do you get the fresh sap? one of the families in our school system has a maple syrup business. but i've never done anything like it myself. wow, neat Courtney!

Well, I sort of compost, sort of feed the possums and other night-time critters. I save and then toss all vegetable scraps, egg shells, etc. over the deck rail into the flower beds. We have an actual compost bin but I am too lazy to walk out to it. It has mostly yard waste in it.

There are just 3 of us during the week and my college son is here on the weekends. I usually plan and cook meals twice a week. Son comes home and finishes off the left-overs for us. I also plan on a left-over night each week.

I too shop frequently because I hate buying stuff and then not using it -- or worse forgetting I have it.

My eldest is in charge of making banana cake when ever bananas get too brown. And I love steaming broccoli stalks. I want to get better about keeping a bag in the freezer for leftover veges etc for soup, but unfortunately our freezer compartment never has room in it.

I loved reading how so many people are being conscious of food waste and cutting down plastics use :-)

Oh, good gracious. Not that intense! I just meant in the sense I don't buy the Aunt Jemima or whatever bottle at the store. I make a simple syrup, and flavor it with Mapleine. Total imitation!
I have been to a tree tapping, back when I lived in Ontario it was a field trip. But nope! Never done it myself.

I thought of this thread today. I have some apples that are getting mushy. So they are going to be turned into an apple pancake tomorrow.

oh I need to come read through this properly as ideas are always welcome....
We NEVER use to throw away anything...but since I haven't been able to cook lately and Sarita has 0 responsibility (as most of the food is payed by me and she works in a gastro pub where she can eat for £3 a meal that would cost you £25) we have been (with Nelma, my carer) crying over the huge bags of stuff that gets thrown away....
I have been buying ready meals (TV dinners?) but I have high blood pressure and these are famous for being high in sodium,I started to try get organized to cook and re use the left overs....

Great idea Jenn about freezing bananas that are good for baking, never thought of that!!!!

Something we do a lot is Tortilla or Spanish Omellette.

If you had a meal with fries, the left over fries can be used fir it, you just need to add eggs and seasoning, some people put onions, and in parts of Spain, onions & peas.

With fruit that is almost out, I always try to invent some desert in which I can use them, we always get tons of carrots left over in the fridge, now we have an Insta Pot (well, is not the original, this is called Kings Pro but it works!!) we made carrot and coriander soup which is great and you can freeze after....I have more but my memory tricks me right now, but wll come back to read through as always need ideas!!!!!

We have one too (compost)- I was big into it a few years ago, but have not been committing to it lately. I always do at least one leftover meal a week too!
Reading all your posts ... I think the biggest thing besides being creative with food - is to suck it up and shop smaller quantities, but more frequently.

Good post Jenn. I'm just around to it now. We don't have much waste of food because I do cook for two with leftovers and god bless my dh, he'll eat leftovers until the item is gone. I get bored. Bread (even moldy bits) goes out to the birds, squirrels and the occasional possum. good bread bits get dried, ground up & frozen for meatloaf. I had two bad raw potato bits last night that got thrown out but apparently my critters aren't potato eaters. Otherwise, all our scraps go into the compost bin.
