At night is my quiet time. My kid is in bed. My husband is either in bed (he works 12 hour shifts as a nurse), or in the other room.
Lately, I'll hear strange sounds. Now some of these are attributed to the dog wandering around downstairs. But lately, I kept hearing a weird bang noise. And it was super close. The kind of noise that you don't quite want to investigate by yourself. But, for peace of mind, I needed to. I've tried to figure it out, but it often is only one bang. No repeat sound, and hard to tell where it came from.

But Sunday night, I got up to investigate. DH was at a friends, so I knew it wasn't him. The boy was in bed. The dog under my feet. As I was standing in the hall, I heard it again. And realized that it was the boy! Apparently, munchkin moves a lot in his bed at night! He has an Ikea bed with a plasticy coating on the boards that make a weird hollowish sound when you kick them with feet during the night! I've very happy to have that mystery solved!

How about you? What do you do when you hear bumps in the night?

I would investigate or (even better) send my husband to investigate.

On the other hand: When watching a movie or something and people investigate I ALWAYS scream at them "Don't go and investigate!" because invariably they will end up dead. (We watch a lot of supernatural stuff...)

Every night between 10:15 and 10:45 I hear a single bang. It freaks me out because usually Jeff is traveling so it's just me and the kids. I also have an extreme paranoia that someone left the garage door up (which has happened before and things disappear quickly around here).

I have since figured out that we have a neighbor who takes their trash out every night before they go to bed and the bang is the trashcan lid shutting... it still makes me jump a little when Jeff's not home though.

And as far as investigating... since I'm usually home alone, it's up to me to investigate. I usually just check to see if doors are locked and garage is shut (or check my alarm app to see if any windows or doors have opened)... after that I try to block it out and move on.

Yes! I always yell at people not to do stupid stuff in movies! Don't go up the stairs, go out the door!

I should work on the blocking it out and moving on! That's a good idea, assuming the house is locked of course!

I don't go investigating as I don't want to find out.. LOL we have an alarm so I am not worried someone is here.. more worried if it is a ghost :)

The other night my daughter fell asleep on the living room couch. She woke up in the middle of the night to music...just one line "I'm the one yeah, I'm the one" (Justin Bieber, I guess). She thought it was one of her sisters cell phones and that ws the ring tone so she got up to check. No...it was her "Alexis" and it just kept playing that line over and over. She was freaked out and unplugged it. Now she jokes she has PTSD everytime she hears it.

When we got our new fridge last year, I admit that I almost peed my pants when I was upstairs and the ice maker churned out a bunch of ice. Either our old fridge was quieter, or I'd gotten used to its noise, cuz this new fridge doesn't sound like "ice falling in the freezer," but rather like "someone is ramming down the kitchen door." I still jump if I'm in the hallway upstairs and I hear the fridge. These darn "open concept" homes allow too many sounds to travel!

Courtney @bestcee I'm glad you figured out what the noise is! Isn't it funny what can bother us but the sleeping person doesn't' even wake up?!

First off, remember I live in the wild west! But, last night about midnight, my hubby jumps out of bed, hits the gun safe (it is on our fingerprints) and grabs the gun.
He pulled on his robe and went thru the house, and then outside. He had heard someone trying to get in the front door. I just fall asleep, figuring a gun shot will wake me up...tee hee
no one was there.
we think it was probably a cat as the door is kinda big and old and bumps loud when pressed!

My hubs works 3rd shift - so I have been an "alone at night-er" for 30+ years (except for weekends ...) I used to be totally freaked out by noises - like scared so much I called the police a number of times - but I'm pretty comfortable being home alone at night now. I usually do get up and check "it" out if I hear something, because I know I'll never get back to sleep if I don't!

I poke hubby and tell him I heard something. Funny though that I am normally the last one in bed and have no problem with walking around if I hear something but once I am in bed - NO way.
This made me giggle! It's so true! There's a difference between exploring when you are still up, and after you are in bed!

We don't often hear strange sounds, but I do sometimes wake up and wonder if the doors are locked. I often go to bed before the rest of them and sometimes they forget to lock the back door to the deck. Both the cat and dog love to go out there at night. I usually do get up and check the doors so I can go back to sleep.

One time we were traveling and my hubby drove the car out somewhere to get a Coke when we stopped at the hotel. We had only brought in overnight bags and I had this weird feeling I should go check the car. I didn't. But the next morning it was not only unlocked but the windows were down with all our stuff still there thank goodness. So now if I get a weird feeling, I usually follow up on it.

Well. Hmmm.... I used to be afraid of the dark as a kid, got older and go over it. Then I saw a little short about the dark, and even knowing it's a fake movie short, (plus the scary "being" at the end totally isn't even that scary) I get freaked now as an adult. It's a mentality thing.

So.... if DH is home, he will investigate or we both will. If it's me, and I'm alone or just with the boys, I do put my big girl panties on and investigate, though feeling like a scardy cat!

Ours does this too!!! I have gotten used to it though

Hubby sleeps like a rock and doesn't hear anything unless it's super loud or happens more than once, so I'm usually the one who has to go look LOL! So far it's always been a kid roaming around the house getting a drink or one of the cats messing around!

Usually I send hubby to investigate. There are times he has to travel & I don't like being home at night with just the kids. I try to keep the TV or music going so I'm not paranoid by all the sounds I here.

We do have a raccoon come up on our porch every once in awhile in search of food. Usually around 10:30pm. It usually freaks me out & then I remember it's the raccoon.

One of the first nights we were in our house we were hanging out on the porch in complete darkness. We heard a rustling in the woods. Shawn thought it was the cat. I was like no way, that sounds like a BIG animal. Sure enough it was 3 deer roaming through our yard. Have I mentioned that we've also had bears in our yard!

Gosh... I wasn't sure where your story was going... great suspense building! :giggle I'm glad it was just your son and that you figured it out. We used to have this weird rattle in our backyard in the fall and I couldn't figure it out! After a couple YEARS of it, I finally figured out it was an outdoor clock on the wall of the house outside. It only rattled when the fall winds picked up and then shortly after that we'd bring the clock inside for the winter and wouldn't hear it anymore. Lol.

As far as random noises at night, I really don't get spooked by them at all. It's very rare that our house is even completely locked up. We also have one door or window unlocked and will randomly forget to shut the garage door. I guess we are pretty confident in the safety of our neighborhood. I know that I'm abnormal with my friends though. My hubby leaves for fishing weekends and weeks pretty often, so i'm home alone many times through the year and my one friend especially gets all worried about me being scared by myself. I keep telling her that it never occurs to me to be scared just because I'm home alone and she always looks at me like I'm crazy. She can't sleep if her husband isn't home with her.
