Do you celebrate the solstice? Do you mark it in any particular way or have any rituals surrounding it? Recognize that it is the shortest day of the year (for the northern hemisphere)?

There are some interesting ways to look at it... Celebrate the Winter Solstice... like "nature itself is inviting us to really accept ourselves, so we can grow and cleanse and prepare for personal growth." which I personally love.

My husband has been looking forward to this day because then it will just get lighter every day from now on. :)

Posting this on FB will probably be the sum of my celebration unless I make a DYD page about it.

Love this! My high school's Latin Club used to throw a big Saturnalia on the Winter Solstice, but that's the last time I remember doing anything for it. There's usually a lot going on for the Summer Solstice (it's also National Aboriginal Day in Canada, lots of pow wows going on). But I don't know of anything official going on locally for this Solstice. You've inspired me to find a way to celebrate it in the back yard!

I love Xmas and all the holiday sights and sounds but the dark dreary days of December always depress me. This year for the first time in many, many years, it didn't bother me at all. That's b/c this month we have had more snow than I can remember and it has kept everything looking clean and pretty, and reflects the light so well that it made it seem lighter at night. But, I am very happy to know that the daylight will slowly increase each day now.

No we don't celebrate it in any special way. I think everyone is always waiting for it though, just to breathe easier the next day knowing they are one day closer to longer days and warmth!

I celebrate the fact that we made it to the shortest day ... and now we can eagerly/happily work our way back to the longest - and the warmest again! :)

I was thinking this morning that I should celebrate winter solstice. I always take notice of it, excited that the days are getting longer again. I kind of celebrated today by posting this photo and the following text on Facebook:

three things to celebrate at the moment: 1. I'm caught up on photo processing again. For at least few hours until I make more pictures.

2. I'm only 10 days away from having my first perfect Project 365 (and I'll probably make it a Project 366, since this was a leap year). 3. After today, the days start getting longer again! December 21 is one of the most exciting days of the year. Short days make me want to hibernate. And I've missed so many walks this time of year, thinking I can wait until mid-afternoon when it will be warmer, but then getting busy, and boom, suddenly the sun is setting like this. Click on the photo to see it with all 355 other photos of the day I've made this year so far.

Yep, I'm with the rest...celebrating the days getting longer! There is truly nothing else about winter that I care to celebrate lol.

Wibter is my least favorite so nothing to celebrate but I dod remember that today is the shortest day so I'm glad that it will be lighter later every day.

We don´t celebrate but everyone´s talking about that this is the day when the darkness is at it´s peak and from now on it´s getting lighter! Yay!!!!

I'm sure you are! At least you're not in Iceland...

No celebrations here - just happy that they days will slowly be getting longer.

No celebration here but I DO like winter much better than summer so these are more of my favorite days. However, the 21st is the anniversary of my father's death from Lou Gehrig's so there's a sadness too. He was only 53. :(

We don't celebrate it, but like many others I am SO HAPPY when it arrives, because it means that the days will be getting longer!!
