I'm looking to purchase a new cutting machine. I have a Silhouette Cameo right now but I would like something with more options.

Which models do you love?

I got rid of my cricut because it didn't give me enough options, lol. I have a Sizzix eclips, and a silhouette cameo. I know someone has the Brother scan n cut and loves it.

What features are you looking for? Cutting files? Bluetooth? Cutting materials?

My Cameo is a few years old so it doesn't cut all the heavier materials that the newer models do now. I would also like bluetooth.

I don't know. I just think it is time to upgrade and am wondering what everyone else is using.

I have the new Cricut, and I (mostly) love it. If you are doing an intricate cut, or trying non-standard materials, be prepared to experiment a bit. Also, be aware that to cut thicker materials you will need the "deep cuts" blade. I'd recommend splurging for the german carbide blade when it comes time to replace the original. But I have cut leather, craft foam, felt, freezer paper, I saved a tonne of money by buying photo matting and cutting it myself on the Cricut. The "Design Space" app has worked well for me. There's a lot of support for importing images and converting them to SVGs, or making SVGs in other programs and importing them...
My biggest complaint is that the writing function takes forever. I used it to do my wedding invites, and with the writing and intricate cutting, it took 40 minutes per card. Thankfully, we were having a super small wedding.

I have an older Cricut and I have been thinking of upgrading to the explorer air. Everyone seems to have silhouette. Assuming I want to do everything, can anyone explain the pros and cons of each?

Do the new cricuts still require cartridges? That's the thing that sold me on the Silouhette a few years ago, I wanted to be able to use all my digital supplies to cut things out and not have to buy a cartridge for each project.

I'm pretty sure if you want to own the designs you have to buy the cartridges. However you have access to use the designs through their store, you just have to pay a fee. However if you decide to stop paying the fee you will no longer have access to the designs.@karen

I've been researching this a bit for a friend lately. IMO I think the silhouette makes more sense to me for a digital scrapbooker.

Also I believe the newest model of the silhouette does all those things that you want it to do, including Bluetooth.

I have a cameo ,that I curse and love in equal measure LoL. But there us no way I would ever change from that to something that limits me to a cartridge or a lending library type design against payment. . At least with the cameo you can use any mortal shape, and the design features you can use yourself to .make your our own are good. Circuit would be like going backwards. If I could justify another machine it would definitely be the Brother scan and cut... Good luck in making a decision.

I have the Silhouette Curio and I love it! Not a Cricut fan. A lot of people in my Silhouette group have complained about the Cricut software and saying Silhouette's is easier to use.

@Shari there's a new Cameo coming out soon! Maybe be patient and see if you like it? I love the Curio because it can do metal etching and stuff.

Here's my cutting machine experience. Sorry in advance for the book.
Cricut: I had an expression. It did great with basic shapes, and letters. It struggled with intricate designs. I hated having to always use cartridges, so I bought a program that let me use svg files. Then an update by Cricut broke the program. I tried out their Design Studio (not Space, studio) and it was okay. But it didn't allow for as much manipulation as I wanted. Then Cricut Craft Space was just coming out, but I hated that any cartridges had to be linked to your account, because I would borrow a cartridge and it caused problems. At that point, I walked away from Cricut. I haven't used the updated Design Space, and have not looked into those features. I don't know if the cartridge linking is still a thing. I sold all my Cricut stuff.

Sizzix eClips: I went to the eClips because it had the cartridge option, and the computer svg option. Plus, I loved the red sizzix dies, and could purchase them digitally to use with my eclips. The customer service has always been so superb with Sizzix! They replaced my machine with a new one, not refurbished, after 5 months when I had a problem, and sent everyone new USB cords when they discovered a better configuration for it - without having to opt in! Their computer software allowed me to create shapes, or things pretty easily, and has a score, cut or draw line. The pen adapter takes almost every marker and pen I've put it in, including sharpies. The laser preview is awesome, and the software let me manipulate objects easily. It's cut everything I've given it, which has only been up to light cardboard. It's also fast, and handles most intricate cuts well. The new model, the eClips 2 does not have the cartridge option, which I haven't really used anyway. But it does have Bluetooth capability.

Silhouette Cameo: I added this to my stash because I liked seeing all the print and cut that people were doing, and while my eClips can print and cut, and does. It seemed easier to use the Silhouette to do so. And it is. Print and Cut is much easier on my Silhouette, especially because a lot of digital stuff is designed to be P&C on the Silhouette. I like the Silhouette because it is super quiet compared to the eClips (I've heard the new eClips 2 is quieter). I haven't bought the Designer Edition software to cut my svg files, because I do still have and use the eClips for that. The pen adapter is for short fat pens. I've heard there's a third party one that lets you use regular pens, but I haven't explored that at this time.

So, for me, I use the Silhouette for any Print and Cut work, or anything I want on sticker paper. I use the eClips for heavier materials, and prefer it for pen work. Vinyl I use either machine. And depending on what the project is, I prefer the eClips if it's a hybrid with folds because of the scoring feature.

thanks for posting, everyone.... this is very useful.

Sarita had offered to buy me a Silhouette. I looked up a few and fell in love with the Curio, but then I read so much stuff about the way it works, that I had a headache even before I could process anything.... so together with the fact that she got into Uni, we needed to save money and, mainly, that if she gave me the Silhouette I wouldn't hear the end of it when I want to complain about her not doing anything in the house...... I forgot about it.
I may get her to buy anyway now, as no matter how much I complain, she keeps the same pace LOL
If I do get it, I may need to ask for a bit of guidance AmyLee @StarryEyedDesigns

Anyone who is thinking of getting the silhouette you can download the basic software and play around with it, without having the actual machine.

That way you can get a feel for it and decide if it's for you!
