Coolio...

Sent from my 1st grader's teacher...

"Tomorrow morning almost everyone on the east coast in the Americas, eastern Asia, the Pacific Islands, and Australia will get the rare opportunity to see a special type of lunar eclipse called a selenelion, or horizontal, lunar eclipse.

A selenelion only occurs when a lunar eclipse happens around the same time as sunrise. Because of its timing, observers have the chance to see both an eclipsed moon-set and sunrise simultaneously.

According to simple geometry, we should not be able to see both the moon and the sun simultaneously during this eclipse configuration. However, Earth's atmosphere bends the light from the sun and moon, making them appear higher in the sky than they actually are.

So, on Wednesday morning, for between two and nine minutes, you might get the chance to see both moonset and sunrise at the same time, which is very rare.

Tomorrow morning's total lunar eclipse, which will be the last total lunar eclipse this year, will begin at 4:45 a.m. EST and end at 9:05 a.m. EST. However, the most brilliant part of the eclipse, when the Earth completely shadows the moon from the light of the sun, will start at 6:25 a.m. EST and end at 7:24 a.m., lasting 59 minutes. It is during this window that the moon will take on its infamous blood-red hue.

The reason the moon takes on a deep-red color during a lunar eclipse is because of Earth's atmosphere. If you were on the moon during a lunar eclipse, Earth would have a red ring around it as it passed between you and the sun. This red glow projects onto the moon, giving it it's red hue.

Wednesday's total lunar eclipse will be the second of four consecutive "blood moons" to be visible in the United States during a two-year time span."

So for all of you Science Nerds who live the right place... just sayin' :giggle

That is really cool! I'll have to have my hubby snap a picture while he is going to work. We aren't up that early but he is. Oh and don't worry...he carpools. No driving and taking pictures at the same time ;)

I heard about this yesterday! I will definitely have to wake up to see it! Never seen one before. :)

This is so cool! I've looked into this when my DS mentioned it. My area says we might not "see" it because of how low it will be to the horizon... I'm still going to look though! Too many neighbors and trees might also be an issue. Not sure completely!

I saw this at 6:30 this morning when I got to work and it was really cool! I wished i had my big girl camera with me!

We all tried... but alas, too many trees. BOO. So glad you caught it, Karen.

saw it here ... since i wake at 5:30 am with my high schooler. we had quite a bit of clouds rolling in ... but got to see it in peeks and bits. very cool!

I was trying to get ready for work and see the eclipse but by the time I got out the door the dang clouds were already here so I couldn't see nothing!!!! Anyone catch the Space Station last night about 7:30pm CST?

it got my son out of bed at 3am! lol, he got extra credit for taking a picture of a very dark sky with a white dot. Insurance being cheaper with good grades is his motivator.

I got to see it the entire time I was driving to work this morning. It was pretty neat.
