Well, things have gotten weirder than they already were. We had to file an identity theft form with the IRS. And file by mail. While we were on vacation someone called my cell number and said they had an uncashed check in my name and to give them a call. We did not call anyone back because we thought it was a scam. So tonite someone came to our house, with our IRS check (the wrong one because the dollar amount is different) and it has a different address on it than our home address. She said she tried to mail it back to IRS, but it came back again. With it was a second envelope, with my husbands name and the wrong address (same as addy on check) saying the IRS has received our identity theft claim. But that claim has the wrong info on it. So I have no idea if someone is trying to change our info to this incorrect info or what the heck is going on. Not sure if this woman had anything to do with it, or was just a good citizen. She did say it was her address on the check. So now I get to call IRS tomorrow to explain all this weirdness. What fun!

That is freaky I hope she was indeed just a good citizen but isn't it sad you have to think otherwise these days? :(

Bleck! Just exactly what you (and the IRS) want to be dealing with at this time of year.. Not that it's fun to deal with any time of year, but you know what I mean.. I hope.. :blush

Wow! That is really weird. Maybe this will be just the clue the IRS needs to figure out who did this in the first place and catch them and get you all straightened back out!

So I called the IRS and they were really no help. They said it would be still 180 days before we get our refund. That I should mail everything back to them, and enclose a statement about what happened. She said that they of course would not be able to do anything else until they receive my written statement....ugh. And so the saga continues.

How frustrating! That's a pretty maddening response from the IRS. I wonder if your state's Attorney General office could help? I certainly hope it gets resolved for you soon!!

Good grief! How totally bizarre!

In a Boston accent: How BIZAAH! And yeah, might sound weird, but you might also want to contact your congress critter's office for help with this situation, too. And possibly your senator critter's office as well.

Good luck. I can't imagine the stress.

I've had this happen to a friend of mine just recently. Someone filed an IRS return in her name. Crazy stuff!

Something similar happened to my son. His identity was stolen, someone amended two years of his returns, and had over $5000 deposited into an account. We never really feel we got closure on it either...the IRS has been no help. I hope it all gets sorted out for you!!

Keep copies of everything! It is the only protection that you have. How bizarre!

Oh my gosh thats crazy. I hope it gets all sorted out but can only imagine how difficult its going to be to explain it all especially as the IRS will probably keep handing you over to different people. With Each phone call try and get a reference Number and the name of the person you have been dealing with. That way you can request the same person each time. Its worked for us in similar situations :) Good luck hope it has a speedy resolution.

Danica, I hope that you are getting better response from them now.

btw. How did this lady that says the check arrived to her address found out YOUR address and phone number?

Well, because i am a pharmacist if you google search me, my address is online. Isn't that just awesome. So when I refuse to fill some crazies prescription they can come and find me at my house. At one point a couple websites had my home address as my place of practice address and that was the case for several of my colleagues as well. We all fought to have the addresses removed. One site when you google has my home address in the search, but when you click on the actual link the address shown is my work. I don't know if the info is cached and that is why it pops up. So yeah lucky me.
