I am no longer a home-schooling momma. My children are all in public school this year. I am having a blast!
I felt a bit disconnected from my older ones, not knowing what they are doing and all. Then a parent explained this program the schools have that I as a parent can go and see each and every assignment and GRADE!!!:woot
Imagine my joy as my 9th grader who I wrestled with in homeschool is an A/B student...seriously I cried!
then...
insert scary music
as I gazed upon my precious 8th grade girls failing grades, and after lengthy emails back and forth with the teachers, and miracle dust sprinkled upon them in their early to bed, we will talk about it in the morning truth session.
They are totally not doing the work in a few classes.

So being the mean and cruel momma...
grounded them, they are connected to me, unless I go out, then they are connected to the couch in the living room.
The kind and loving teacher has given me not only the assignments that they didn't do, but some more for them to do (without credit) to keep their minds fresh and inspired!!
:flirty

So do you spy on your kids? if so, tell all!

Oh yes, we have a ParentVue here that allows to me see all assigments and grades. And...get this...what they bought for lunch too! (This comes in handy when you're trying to figure out why your oldest daughter's lunch money keeps disappearing so fast. Then, you see she's buying 6 cookies a couple of times of week. She can't eat them because she's a Celiac. Hmmm. She was treating her friends. LOL Once a month is fine...a couple of times a week. Umm. No.)

Also, we have Edmoto, which frankly I don't love. It's pretty much Facebook for school but I can see all the kids' responses to assignments. Interesting but invasive IMO.

We do not have the parent portal set up here yet, but will have it starting in January so, I WILL be spying on my oldest then. However, I have to make get all of his teachers sign his planner daily so I know what his homework is each night otherwise he won't do it. It is a real struggle with him. Although, this year he is playing football and he has forgotten to get his planner signed a few nights and he has done his homework on his own. That is because 4 times of not doing your homework and you are kicked off the team. The teachers tell the coaches when you don't do your homework. Also, when homework doesn't get done the coaches make the WHOLE team do extra hills and no one wants that. The hills are extreme because they are literally like running straight up into the air and you have to run right back down them and then, right back up them. They make them do it like 10 times in a row. No fun...lol. The 8th grade boys also try to go around and find out who didn't do their homework so, Noah always makes sure it isn't him. I am very proactive in both of my boys life and if I could strap a video recorder on my oldest I would...lol. Is that bad??? I am really excited for this parent portal to start because I can't wait to be able to see if he is doing his work or just messing around. I want him to buckle down. I am really excited because I do have a meeting next week with the English teacher that teaches the advanced English and she wants to talk about Noah possibly getting into her class. This is huge because she is not an easy class to get into. So, Anne, I feel ya on the child that was not doing the work. I have been there done that. Never something you want to go through.

So, yes, I do spy because I want to know what is going on. Also, because I worry about my kids. *sigh* But I have to say my oldest who used to be locked up like Fort Knox likes to talk to me a lot more now which I love. Like he went to a dance last Friday at school. And supposedly he wasn't into girls or so I thought, but he ended up dancing with a girl named, Alexis, and now he likes her. He blushes when he talks about her. She is in 2 of his classes and he talks to her every day now.:flirtyHe took money to buy her a drink at lunch today. :stashI think I am in trouble.

oh dear friend, I have seen those eyes on that boy...you are in trouble...but ain't it nice he told you the name of the girl and tells you he is gonna get her a drink? that is so huge...sniff sniff...

We have ParentWeb also. LOVE IT. All of the homework/tests/grades are on it. Plus calendar and forms, etc... And we can pay for all of their stuff from there (private school *sigh*)

Can't see what they ordered for lunch, though... that would be awesome.

The best part is that the program has an iPhone app which I used to use daily for DS #2 (who has attention/organization problems) to make sure all HW done (once he transitioned from agendas in MS). Don't need it much anymore *thank heavens* but appreciate that it is there.

We have Parent Portal, complete with iPhone app. We used it a lot right before school started because the girls were checking their schedules.

I used to use it daily to check on my son's grades. Now he's in college and his grades are his responsibility. My girls are straight A students and usually they also do all the extra credit so I only check Parent Portal to entertain myself with how far about 100% they can get their grades. It's definitely a change from yelling at my son about not turning in work, etc.

P.S. I don't really think it's spying. It's more of the schools trying to give parents information they want/need before grades get so low they can't be corrected. Rather than you only knowing at conferences and grade cards that your child isn't turning in assignments, you can take the initiative and check it more frequently. I think our children are growing up in a world full of transparency where nothing is private... and it starts in school.

He also told me that he bought a Twix and shared it with her at the dance and bought her a drink there. He danced with her, too. :cry I just wanna know when he grew up...*sniff, sniff* However, I am so glad he is telling me these things. It makes me feel so good to know he feels so close close to me. I love that boys so much. :heartslub Oh, and my friend, please tell me it gets easier?!?!??

bhAHA, don't worry, in a day or two, he will do something to remind you he is still a kid and drive you mad! at least that is how it has been working here in my abode!

bwhahahaha....no doubt about that. he has a game today so he will be good as gold. i am sure he will probably do something by the weekend though. LOL!

LOL! I constantly go on the website to see my kids grades & assignments. They can't get away with ANYTHING!!! Bwaaa haa haa haa!!!!

Our school was an early adopter of the online parent grade access. Unfortunately, the problem we had was that the teachers didn't keep up with inputting the grades. Some would wait until the end of the quarter to do their part. We also had the facebook-like thing that Laura mentioned. Unfortunately, that was where all the assignments were listed, and only the kids had access to it. One of the things that drove me nuts about that was that teachers would add extra assignments later. Example the weekend assignments would be posted Friday afternoon but then Sunday night a new assignment would be added that would be due Monday morning. I was so grateful that I had good and conscientious kids or the process that was supposed to help parents would have driven me batty! Oh wait..I am batty...but that isn't the reason. :hehe

We have the parent portal so I do keep up with grades. Mine are still pretty young though - so not too much need to spy. They still like to tell me things. However, last night one of Natalie's little classmates called - from his mom's phone to mine - and I had a moment of panic. Fourth grade is way to early for boys to call, right?!!?? Anyway, he was only calling to ask about a homework assignment. Phew!!!

Ours is called Skyward, it's a dream come true with a kid who tends to "forget" his entire school day the minute he walks out the door.

I think the name Skyward sounds pretty dramatic, though. It cracks Tom up when I load the app up on my phone because he thinks it's all a little Excalibur-esque.

"Let me look that up in SKYWARD!!"

It's also the email system for the whole school, so it's how Nick communicates with teachers, how supplemental materials are downloaded for classes, etc. So it's probably the most used app on Nick's phone.

I might have just imagined some Star Wars music and a light saber in place of the pointer....

We have a program called ParentsWeb too. My boys are only in 2nd grade, so it is just now really being useful for me to 'track' their grades. They still have folders that they bring home every night with homework, etc.

I totally spy on my son. Lord knows, he would forget his head if it wasn't attached to his body and is notorious for not remember what he is supposed to do. I also get updates on his grades in email every other week.

Oooo I can't wait until middle school when I can spy on LUke, too! Although, right now he goes to the school where I teach, so I do some literal spying sometimes. Bwahahaha!

I'll have to find out if any of these systems are used in our district! They sound great. My boys are first graders and no one has ever mentioned it.

We use ParentConnect, but not really until Middle School. I think elementary parents can log in, but no one does. (Thank goodness, bc I rarely put anything on it for my 2nd graders!)
