They're on tomorrow night and we really don't watch them (DH hates award shows) but I always want to see what the "must-see" movies are.

Have you seen any of the movies that are nominated this year? What are your recommendations?

i have seen all the movies nominated and i really LOVE all of them!!
maybe my favs are:

Argo (you really have to see it it!! Ben Affleck rocks!)
Django Unchained (i LOVE all Tarantino's stuff!)
Lincoln (it'll be a fave for american people, i really LOVED it! Daniel Day-Lewis <3)
Beasts of the Southern Wild (i enjoyed the movie. it's rare to see anything about the american miserables that we totally forget they really exist. and that girl is amazing!)
Silver Linings Playbook (the story is great and well, i love me some bradley cooper! LOL)
Zero Dark Thirty (another great movie!!)
Les Misérables (not my kind of movie but you have to see Anne Hathaway!!)
Life of Pi (OMG!! wonderful!)

as you see i LOVE almost everything lolololol
i'm crossing my fingers for Argo and Silver Linings Playbook ;-)

Heard Argo was the fav. I wanna see Lincoln, Django, and Les Miz (I like those kind of movies but DH not so much).

I've seen them all except Amour and Life of Pi. My favorite was definitely Lincoln with Argo a close second. What makes them both so good is that even though you know what happens, you're on the edge of your seat with both of them. Lincoln was very talky, but I liked that. As a lawyer, I really liked how Lincoln used the power of storytelling to persuade, I also loved Beasts of the Southern Wild - it's On Demand now, and when I rented it, I watched it twice. It's raw and gritty, but its also a fairy tale, with mythical creatures and a fierce heroine. Django Unchained was entertaining, Christoph Walz and Leonardo were great, but its the same revenge fantasy that was Inglorious Basterds. Zero Dark Thirty was ok, but it wasn't as good as The Hurt Locker. I saw Les Mis twice as a show, and was really looking forward to the movie, and the movie is kind of a disappointment. Russel Crowe is pretty terrible, and the movie is shot almost entirely in close ups, so seeing big heads singing got annoying. Silver Linings Playbook was ok - as a public defender in the city where the movie is set, all the mental health/legall aspects of the film were completely inaccurate, and this was problematic for me personally. And the movie changes tone about three quarters through the movie into a feel good flick, and that abrupt switch didn't work for me.

I have no intention of seeing Amour - it looks way too depressing. And I would love to see Life of Pi - I just couldn't talk my husband into it after I made him sit through The Master.

I don't mind seeing highlights or seeing the dresses, but I can't make myself sit through the entire telecast and I actually have not seen one of the movies nominated for best picture this year.

I haven't seen Silver Linings Playbook (I want to see it), Django Unchained, or Beasts of the Southern Wild. I've seen all of the others, and my favorite was Les Mis.

Les Mis: I love the musical to start, and I just thought they did a remarkable job of bringing it to the screen -- I thought it was the best movie musical I've seen, and really captured the intimacy of a theatrical experience in a very special way. I also thought that it fixed a couple of story gaps by directing your attention with the camera, and this the story is easier to understand than the Broadway version. I thought all of the singing was amazing, especially Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman. I've heard people criticize his and Russell Crowe's singing, and thought that was misplaced. Jackman was fabulous at capturing the emotions of the songs and making it feel natural, which is EXTREMELY difficult. The prettiest sound isn't always the best choice for a particular moment. I thought Crowe's singing was fine, it's just he couldn't seem to both act and sing at the same time (you can see him thinking about his breathing/singing -- but he's wonderful in the moments when he's not singing). So, it would get my vote because I think the difficulty and novelty of what they did was much higher than the other films. That being said, it's a very intense film with no real breaks (you get an intermission and scene changes/clapping in the theater that you don't get in the movie), and so it can be difficult to watch.

Life of Pi -- Loved this movie. Really beautiful, and a wonderful adaptation of the book.

Lincoln -- I was a bit disappointed because I expected to love this movie and I thought it was good, but not amazing. Daniel Day Lewis does give a wonderful performance (although I don't think the difficulty level was as high as what Hugh Jackman did in Les Mis). I thought the ending was overkill, and I'm not really sure why Sally Field is nominated.

Zero Dark Thirty -- Well done, interesting movie. But just not my favorite given the others.

Argo -- I really loved this film. I thought Affleck did a great job at building the suspense throughout the movie, and the occasional comic relief was great.

We never have the opportunity to watch movies when they come out...we usually have to wait for them to come out on DVD and then have to be put on a waiting list at the library to see them!! I am SO far behind on movies and don't have a clue!!!

I love the Oscars! I 've seen most of the nominated movies and performances - I still need to see Life of Pi and Argo. I'm rooting for Argo. That movie was so amazing. Even though I knew how things would turn out, I was biting my nails the whole time. But I was also laughing! That's a good mix! :)

It was a pretty awesome year for movies. Silver Linings was also pretty great. Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman made me cry. Lincoln had some great acting, but reminded me of an old-time West Wing episode. Lots of good stuff!

I'm not a big fan of Seth MacFarlane so I hope he doesn't suck!

I have to watch The Oscars if at all possible. It's absolutely a guilty pleasure even though some years I spend a whole lot of time with my eyes rolling and talking smack (to myself, because no one else wants to watch :P ). I didn't get to see as many of the nominated movies this year but I'm rooting for Argo, I loved it and I thought Ben Affleck should have gotten a Best Directors nod.

well, we are more or less at the same.... I still haven't watched the last Twilight movie, and we have the DVDs of Friends with Benefits and another company here and still haven't watched either as my daughter has a biyfriend now.... LOL

though I know about Les Mis, haven;t seen it yet and, though the movie allows for a greater photography and possibilities on the book which is amazing, we are musicals' people in this house and to me, Les Mis on stage will always be the fav...though I wont miss Jackman for anything ...so, will watch it when it comes on DVD.

I usually like the Oscars because apart from the awards thing some of the performances are amazing...
Now I would like to see Argo, not so sure about Tarantino's this time, I like him but in the phase am going through, not sure this film is for me... not sure about 0 Dark either....
Really want to see the Silver Linings & Lincoln, and will surely watch Life Of Pi and Beast of the Southern World on DVD, we have Love Film which sends us 2 DVDs per time, both films are on our rental lists reserved, which means we get them as soon as they come out on DVD...

@ Julia: I worked for a tourism company called Kon Tiki...what does it mean?
