I am thinking maybe I need to learn to sew again...or learn to sew better. I own a machine, but it sits in a closet collecting dust. I used to love playing with it, but that was YEARS ago! I have been dropping a small fortune on etsy creations for my kiddos and I was thinkin if I just learned to do it myself I'd save a lot of money right? Plus, I have a friend who sends her creations to me to take photos for her shop....I see this handmade goodies thing quickly becoming a new addiction lol. Anyhow, are there any seamstress divas in here and does anyone have some easy sewing projects they can link up to? Especially things for kids like costumes and other clothing items. I look at a pattern and feel intimidated, but maybe I could do it with some really dumbed-down instructions! :flirty
 
I'm of no help in the sewing world as I gave my mom the sewing machine that she bought me years ago and only used twice.
 
I soooo wish I could sew...just last sunday my mom helped me with our curtains and she was OFFERING to leanr it to me. I said, I would love to, just not right now...haha. But seeing all those awsome etsy goodies...*drool*. I have to learn from scratch and will prob. get somewhat upset when I won't be able to do the hard stuff right away!! haha
 
Start with headbands. There's a ton of tutorials online! They are easy and manageable, and you just need those fat quarters of fabric that are $1 each!
 
Yes - headbands are great starters. Also retrofitting t-shirts - ya know the ones that you get for participating in this & that that are always so big.

I make costumes for my kids every year. It's so much fun! Don't be afraid to jump in - I usually use clothing from my kids' closets as patterns, just make sure to leave 1/2 inch on either side for seams.

And don't be too afraid of patterns. They're pretty easy, unless the writer used a whole lot of oldy timey lingo. But you can google it.

Haha, it seems a few of us are in the same boat! Thank you for the links....that easy peasy shirt looks pretty....easy peasy! And super cute! And I have made a few no-sew headbands before, but maybe it's time to try sewing some too? Glad I don't have to work this weekend because my machine is coming out of the closet!
 
Easy Peasy shirt looks like a good way for me to figure out how to use my serger, which I've had for 4 years and never used because it scares me to death.

I feel you Erin, I've been coveting this really cute bag I saw at Lilah's cheer rehearsal with ruffles on it, so I'm tempted to jump into sewing one instead of forking out the moolah for it.....but I'm rusty too!! I might check out those headbands, good idea! good luck on your sewing weekend, looking forward to seeing some pics of your new creations :)

I would love a serger! I really like jersey knits but they don't like sewing machines . . .

I'll be saving for a serger after I've finished saving for a MacBook . . . in maybe 2 more years.
 
I usually sew better without instructions, just by feel, but I also only sew really easy stuff :)
 
I think Val Wibbens works some magic behind a sewing machine.

I don't have the patience to cut out patterns and fabric and piece everything together to sew even though it seems like a good idea. If there was a way to wing it, I'd be all over it. :)
 
Oh yes, I want to make things with ruffles and fun patterns lol. I am digging anything with ruffles lately! And a serger.....eeesh I wouldn't even know where to begin. Here's to starting easy with some headbands this weekend hahahahahaha!
