How often for family photos?

So how often do you take family photos. As in a paid, professional photo shoot?

I generally try to do once a year for official shoots. We had our first family photo shoot in almost 5 years last May, and tonight we had another. I've decided it's something I want to do once a year. My Project 365 snapshots are important, but I think I'll be old and gray and never regret having spent the money on family pics.
 
We do our yearly...but my sister and I trade photography sessions, so it's easy to get done! I like having updated family pics every year though. :)

I like to have my sister take our family photos :)

Preferably once a year.
 
Well, I don't do paid professional. LOL. I used to till I learned how to work a DSLR, and now I just do it myself. we did our first official ones that I took in October 2011, but we'll do more this summer. :)
 
I would love to have them done once a year, but it ends up being more like every 18 mo-2 years. The biggest problem I have is that I haven't found a local photographer the I love. Any ideas on how to go about finding a good one?

Ours typically are once a year. However last year we waited a bit longer so we could include our baby that was due in a few months. I also appreciated the fact that I didn't look like a huge blob in them as well. This year is going to have to a bit longer than a year too, since we will be adding another baby soon. I always figure once a year is good just because kids grow so darn fast in that short amount of time. Well that and our family keeps growing quite routinely too :)
 
We've never had a paid professional family photo shoot. :(

However, I have big plans for the fall! My cousin is starting her own photography business, so when we go visit, I'm going to talk her into taking some of us (at least some cute ones of DD outside in the leaves). SS won't be with us, though, so we will have to get some done up here, too. Ideally, I'd like to do a combo shoot with my sister and her family and have the pics be part of our Christmas present to our mom.

I'd love to get them done every year in the fall for our Christmas card, so I'm hoping this year will start that new tradition.
 
Never :). I did look into it but I just found the photographers too expensive, guess it isn't *that* much of a priority for me, after all. I bought a tripod instead and I'm taking one family photo per month with the 'magic camera' this year. A couple of them aren't great but it's quite a few more than the none we've had over the last few years!

I think the problem for me is that I really don't want the print up on the wall in the house. I have family pictures up but I prefer to display the one's where no-one's looking at the camera. I just want the family shots to keep (and scrap, obviously!).
 
Now that the kids are all grown and having their own families, we don't do professional photos anymore. We used to have them done once a year when the fire department came around and sold us services for a fraction of what we would normally pay. It was super nice too!
 
I haven't had someone else do them in 7 years. Since I'm a photographer, I've just set up the tripod and had a friend behind the camera to push the button and get the kids to smile. hahaha. BUT that being said, it's been 5 years since I've even done that. Yikes. I'm hoping to get a new one this year - maybe in the fall.
 
We've done it twice. Once when my boys were 1 and 3 (they are 6 and 8 now) and that was only because they were doing them for the church directory. :) Then last summer we paid to have them done down by the beach at sunset and they were really bad. Like so bad that I wish I had just used my tripod and time myself. A point and shoot camera would have been better. sigh. So this summer we are going to try again, but with a friend instead, that way I'm not expecting too much and will be pleasantly surprised if we get some good ones. :)
 
Um... never LOL!! Sad, I know, but I am way to cheap to pay someone to do it. It's the whole reason I got into photography. I think we are going to do it soon though because our last family picture we had done includes only 2 of our 4 children so I guess we need to update it, although I hate getting pictures with me in it.
 
We do every other year, but I make sure to take a LOT of family snapshots with all of us in them. In fact, this is a year we need to do professional pictures again... good reminder!

We have enlargements of our family photos in 4 different spots (all different poses) in our home. I do have to say, it's a bit of a chore
getting all the wardrobe decisions worked out and the cooperation from everyone, but they are getting better now that we've been doing this forever, lol. And, they know it's only every other year, so that helps!
