Pad Patter: 2/14 - Kids Lunches

That article was crazy.

I also think it seems so weird that some schools outlaw peanut butter. I understand allergies, but it seems weird that someone eating a sandwich in the room would set off someone else's allergies. I've always wondered if it is just that schools figure kids will give other kids stuff and they don't want the liability?

Okay... if someone wants ideas for lunches, here is the crazy weelicious lady's link. http://weelicious.com/category/lunch-ideas/ Her site is different than it used to be. She used to show what she gave them for their lunches every day, and it was crazy amazing the variety and things she did with their lunches. I didn't take time to really look around, but it looks like it is mostly recipe-driven now. Still, if you can't find something new/creative on her site, I just don't know where else you could look. Some of the things gross me out, but at least there is a really really wide variety. :dizzy

My son hates sandwiches, and up until last month did not want to even try school lunch (he's only in 1st grade). I finally talked him into trying it and now he eats it almost every day likes it - which I love too because making lunches for him was a pain! As I said any kind of sandwich was out, a lot of days I'd do lunchmeat slices, cheese slices, and crackers, or hot stuff in a thermos. Often times I would make these pizza puffs in batches and just stick a few in each day.

I have been letting the kids eat lunch at school but I think I'm going to switch that up. It's so much easier to let them just eat at school but I know it's sooo much healthier for them if I pack it.

That article is ca-raa-zy! I can't believe that inspector!!! If I were that mom.......

We have been packing our daughter's lunch since she's been in school - her allergies make it to hard for anything else... but now that she's a diabetic it's a bit harder... up until last month we were having to calculate the carbs for the school nurse to dose her insulin... now that she is on an insulin pump, it's easier... thankfully! This is what I'd send to school everyday with her lunch.

as for what she has... we mix it up a bit. Every day I try for something a bit different than the day before - she really likes peas and chicken less chic n nuggets from Quorn...or Trader Joe's cheese pizza, and a yobaby yogurt....

andrea I didn;t know Molly was diabetic now :( hugs for you both, it must be difficult t adjust yet again.

Kimberlee...with peanut allergies, (from what I've been told) if a child has PB, doesnt wash their hands and then touches a wall at school, and then an allergic child later touches that wall...it can set off a reaction. So it makes sense to ban nuts entirely at schools with allergies. Especially with younger kids.

My girls are in the same year as a boy with peanut allergies, and when they were in the younger years every child had to wash their hands as they came into the classroom specifically for that reason.

So for all the mums who use school lunches, how can you justify the cost? Or is it cheap where you are?
Where I am a school lunch (may or may not contain a juice cup) costs $5. Multiplied by 4 kids and I've paid at least $20 for them to have lunch that day. And in a week it's $100. And that's ONE thing. No snacks or treats. If I get them something for recess as well that's another dollar or two each.

Compared to the cost of buying bread and ham/salad etc I just can't pay that (and DH wouldn't let me! :giggle)

I pack for my pre-Ker and we mix it up quite a bit. She would take sushi everyday if she could but alas it makes me nervous in her lunchbox.

My middle schooler has to pack because she is gluten free and the school's allergy options are sooooo ridiculous. She usually takes a salad with some kind of protein or leftovers.

Oh my goodness! That is a lot. It's just $1.25 for school lunch here. Pretty sure that's cheaper (or just as cheap) as packing a lunch from home.

She eats at school maybe twice a week. She only likes a few of their options. We have a certain repertoire of things she takes and we just alternate those. Lunchables, crackers with laughing cow cheese, PB sandwich(she hates lunchmeat), yogurt, fruit, carrots, granola bars, etc.

Lunch is $2.25 here, so it's pretty affordable. Wish it was $1.25, though. :giggle
