Here's the deal. We are moving to the states in one month and we have plans to go visit some old neighbors of ours this weekend for one last time before we move. Well, we just found out today that their two year old was diagnosed this morning with chicken pox. Both my boys (3 and 5) have been vaccinated, but I know that it is still possible for them to get a mild case of the illness.

We have pretty much decided that we aren't going. I just can't justify exposing them to the illness just so we can see old friends. And that's saying nothing of the fact that we will be making an international move in a few weeks.

Are we being paranoid and making this into a bigger deal than it is? Would you still go? I am a nurse so I know that statistically the chance of them getting sick is slim, but as a mom I can't help but think that even a slim chance is too much. What do you think?

Eta: oh and I guess I should add that we are supposed to sleep there so that means they will get good and exposed :/

That is a total bummer!! for sure!

I always say follow your mother's intuition. You have it for a reason. :)

Kelly, I'm with you - no visit. My IRL BF is a family doctor and I know she has said the chicken pox vaccine failure rate is about 20%. I can't think of anything that might make an overseas move harder than 2 kids with chicken pox during it. Best not to risk it!

That's too bad that you won't get to visit your friends.

My son had been vaccinated but still got Chicken Pox. It was VERY mild. He had maybe 4 spots and wasn't sick at all but the Dr. still called it Chicken Pox. I still wouldn't want to risk it with an International move though.

I agree with everyone Kelly. I know how hard a decision this is for you...but it's not worth the risk.

kelly i don't think you're overreacting at all. i agree with everyone else, you made the right choice.

I'm with everyone! Better safe than sorry, plus you have that feeling for a reason! Follow it!

over-react away. There is no way I'd go... I probably wouldn't even go if I didn't have an international move.

i wouldn't go. and if they are friends enough, they will totally, totally understand.

Definitely go with your instinct! Mom's intuition is rarely wrong.

Hmmm...tough call, Kelly, but I don't think I'd go. We just moved back from Germany a year ago and it was difficult enough with two well kids. I can't imagine doing it if they were sick, miserable and itchy.

i say go and leave the kids at home lol,no not really chicken pox is highly contagious both my boys have had it and they was vaccinated too

I wouldn't go or take the kids. My little sister got the pox and she was vaccinated... and she got a really really bad case of it... I still remember it, she was miserable and made eVERYONE miserable too.
