Happy Global Wind Day!

When I was little, we would always drive past wind turbines on our way to our favorite camping spot. I’m sure I had to ask my mom what they were because I just thought they were giant pinwheels. I always thought it would be so cool to climb to the top of one because they’re so huge!

Today’s questions:

Have you ever seen wind turbines in person?

What is something you dislike doing in the wind?

What is something you enjoy doing in the wind?

Have you ever seen wind turbines in person? Yes; there are some 30 minutes away from my house.

What is something you dislike doing in the wind? Shoveling dirt

What is something you enjoy doing in the wind? Flying kites (preferably two string kites so I can attempt “flips” with the kite).

Have you ever seen wind turbines in person?
Yes - when we drive to Los Angeles, there is a huge wind farm along the way just past Palm Springs.

What is something you dislike doing in the wind?
I'm not a huge fan of wind, it makes the world seem a little out of control. :D

What is something you enjoy doing in the wind?
Flying with a tail wind makes the trip from AZ to the east coast much faster!

Did you know that wind energy:
  • is one of the most cost-effective sources of energy.
  • is not dependent upon fossil fuels or coal, making it a clean energy source.
  • is a sustainable source of energy that will never run out.
Now you know! (Thanks Internet.)

Living in a county that was on the verge of having a wind farm within 1 mile of town, I am in a group that has done a lot of research on wind turbines (my cousin's farm was in the projected area).
As for point #2 of it not being dependent upon fossil fuels or coal.... flat out lie. Wind turbines need oil lubricant to keep the turbines turning, many gallons for each unit. They can also leak that oil as well. And, many have caught on fire and came tumbling down.

Have you ever seen wind turbines in person? Yes, there is a wind farm about 45 minutes northwest of me. It is located off of a highway and a rest stop is right beside it. Some of the turbines are less than 100 yards from the rest stop and are noisy as all get out when the wind is really blowing. Residents in the area have changed their mind about it being a good thing. Some residents have had to move because they began having health issues living so close to the turbines.

There is also another wind farm about 30 minutes east-southeast of me that can be seen from the highway that I take to get to Columbus. It is also near a lake and a lot of residents in the area are no longer loving it.

Lots of fertile farm land was taken away for these 2 wind farms and it would take many years to get the soil back to prime farm land if by some chance the wind farms were taken out. Definitely not in my lifetime.

Thankfully, the potential wind farm near my town has been denied... twice by the governing board in the state of Ohio. Many other projects in Ohio are being denied after much study by the governing board and vocal opposition by residents.

Sorry to hijack your pad patter, but this is something that is very important to me. I will admit that at one time I thought it would be neat to have them nearby but then I started reading and studying the information that the proponents of "green new energy" don't talk about.

Flying (and driving) with a tail wind definitely helps! On our latest drive one gust of wind nearly took us off the road! Thankfully DH was driving and is much better than me at reacting to wind.

Thank you for fact checking me; I don't want to spread misinformation. I will update my first post.

I've had picnics in fields close to wind turbines, and walked past them. There are many scattered around the Countryside. One of the local Primary schools has a small one that powers the school.
I've never been up in one, but I have been up to the top of one of the tallest working windmills in England. That was difficult, but I was the smallest in our Primary school class at the time of the school trip.

Have you ever seen wind turbines in person? - Lots of times... They are a common sight in Europe

What is something you dislike doing in the wind? - Just being in the wind... wind messes up my hair and my hair doesn't do wind... at all...

What is something you enjoy doing in the wind? - Frolicking in the waves and taking photos of the ocean... or line-drying laundry. Other than that - wind is a nuisance.

Cape Town is called the Mother City, but today it could totally be the windy city. We also call the South Easter the Cape Doctor because it blows pollution etc out to sea.
Still the cold fronts, strong winds and daily rain are making this a wet and wild winter.

Have you ever seen wind turbines in person? Yes, we have them here. but we also saw them in action in Holland recently.

What is something you dislike doing in the wind? When it messes my hair up. But no, usually I will take the wind over the heat of summer any day.

What is something you enjoy doing in the wind? Staying at home, inside with the tea and entertainment at hand.

Have you ever seen wind turbines in person? I've seen them a couple of times in Indiana. We don't have any really close to where we live though. I've seen the turbine blades on semi trucks going down the highway and they are massive!

What is something you dislike doing in the wind? Raking leaves? :giggle Also, my hubby used to have a jeep and loved taking all the doors and top off and driving around town, but I have long hair and that HURTS when it whips in your face. Not a fan of that so much.

What is something you enjoy doing in the wind? I enjoy a nice breeze on a hot day to cool off... full on wind though? I'm probably going to stay inside. Lol!

You are welcome. Those that are all for wind turbines and solar panels only put out the "good" information about them and leave out the downsides. I am not totally against them but I think the whole story needs to be told, not just one side of it. Our world can never do without fossil fuel because it is used in so many different ways. Heck, it is used to make the turbines, solar panels and even electric car batteries.

Yes! They are cool! We have a few wind farms not too far from here, and there's a farm down the road with one.

What is something you dislike doing in the wind?
Listening to the trees around my house popping and cracking...always makes me nervous.

What is something you enjoy doing in the wind?
I do enjoy watching a good thunderstorm rolling in and will sit on the porch in the wind and watch. That's about the extent of my wanting to be out in the wind lol

That’s fun you’ve been to the top of a windmill Angela, though being the smallest at the time probably made it less fun.

I don’t like wind messing up my hair either.

I’m sorry about your wet and wild winter Stefanie. I hope you get to stay inside with your tea and entertainment!

Raking leaves lol that’s the worst when it’s windy for sure! ;)

High winds and trees are not a good combination! My brother’s trampoline ended up in his neighbor’s tree this year thanks to a whole lot of wind. :-/
