Lately, I've been craving a good poutine. And cheese fries are not poutine, although delicious. Neither is the weird concoction I had labeled poutine last week. It was good, and I guess Indiana poutine since the 'gravy' was ranch. (Did you know Ranch is a food group in Indiana?) But it was not poutine.

Have you ordered or bought anything that surprised you because the description was not what you expected?

Yes. Ordering Taco Salad and they serve it mixed with Thousand Island dressing. o_O

Pretty much everywhere I've had grits at a restaurant, I've been surprised. I suppose they start with grits, but they certainly don't add salt/pepper or butter. They are a big lump of unseasoned yucky.

The first time I had a burger in Australia was an eye opener - fried egg, beetroot and pineapple on it!
This reminds me of when I was going to college in Minnesota. I went to the coffee shop to order a burger and there were two options: hamburger and California burger. I asked what the difference was. The hamburger was a meat patty on a plain bun. The California burger had cheese, tomato, lettuce, ketchup and mustard. When I exclaimed that was just a normal hamburger he asked where I was from: California. He just rolled his eyes and went on to help the next person.

I remember ordering shrimp and grits at a New Orleans seafood restaurant. I didn't realize the way they make it, but it is made in a thin gravy with a thin gravy. Some chefs- Emmeril Lagasse is one, he put cream in it!

I made taco salad and we usually serve it with a catalina style dressing. After having a bite, my mother in law added ranch. Ranch and catalina does not sound like a good mix, but thousand island sounds worse!

Really? Is that how it's normally served? Definitely unexpected compared to America!

My husband stopped ordering grits except at Bob Evans. He says they are the only ones around that do it right. One time it was cream of wheat instead of grits!

That's an awesome story! I love it! Also, burgers should have all the fixings except pickles and onions. LOL!

That's interesting. And definitely unexpected!

I can't think of anything.... but now I would love to have Poutine.... I think I've only had knock off Poutine too. And I agree Disco fries are not the same. Though, they are my fav at a diner!

Disco fries would be much closer to poutine than this was!

Ranch dressing on Poutine?! Oh my the people of Quebec would be up in arms :)

I had Yorkshire Puddings once in a restaurant and when they arrived they were definitely not. When I told the server they weren't he argued with me, I explained both my parents are from Yorkshire and I ate them every Sunday with roast beef growing up. :)

I don't like poutine as I am not a big gravy eater however I will eat it "deconstructed" so I can dip the fries in the gravy LOL..I dislike soggy fries unless it is chilli cheese fries. I do love the cheese curds... we found some great flavored ones at our grocery that we enjoy.

@jaye That's an awesome story!
I'm never had Yorkshire pudding.

I have Mom's recipe for Yorkshire pudding but we eat them as "popovers" as (guess what) lol I don't like gravy all over mine LOL ... my Mom would make them with roast beef all the time, but we would just put butter in them.

As a girl who has spent most of her life in Middle America, USA - No, thats not a burger.:sense

I make taco salad with Kraft Catalina dressing, but the recipe I was given calls for creamy Italian. I prefer Catalina, plus I found creamy Italian hard to find at the time, and wasteful as I ended up throwing most of the bottle away.
