True Confession Game

(what is with the salted butter? salt is one of those silent killers for the vast majority of people with a few exceptions, if i could convince my DH to let me throw it out, we wouldn't own a salt shaker, there's more than enough sodium in every packaged food we buy) -all said out of love but ok i'll get down off my soap box now

Expound please?

What's cooking chocolate?
@Eyeore We do have bakers chocolate. We also have chocolate discs that people melt down. Maybe that's the same as cooking chocolate?
we have cooking chocolate too, i think it's technically called compound chocolate or something like that and has a different ratio of fats in it & isn't tempered (i'm just referencing way to many cooking shows - i've never tempered chocolate in my life) & it's cheaper because of it's composition but will still produce an acceptable result in recipes - although maybe not for the Gordon Ramsay's of the world

I ripped the tag off a pillow even with the federal penalties warning me not to.
i've only just cut the warning tag off our 4-5year old toaster, it has bugged me for years because it's clearly visible & an eyesore for it's intended purpose but i left it on more for the kids but even then, they were old enough to know not to submerge a toaster in water - putting a knife in to remove a crumpet, well that might be another story.

I confess that I will start a new book at 9.30pm KNOWING that I have work the next day :giggle

These are cracking me up! Yeah, I totally hide snacks for my family too. I can make a box of milk duds last me a week, but if ANYONE in my family sees it... it's gone in five minutes. Lol.

And I'm totally with Amanda on reading way too late at night.... but I can't quit it, so... oh well! :giggle

@bellbird so my adding a pinch of salt to any frosting recipe is not healthy? LOL
Everyone is like "this is the best frosting I've ever had"... hmmm it's my little secret recipe because it just adds a little something without actually being able to place it (you don't taste salt)

I do the opposite - I use unsalted, even if salted is called for.
You know how when you get pregnant you have cravings or go off things, I went off salt, I mean altogether ever since so for the last 20+ years I have used no salt or hardly any, we kept it in saltshaker for guests' use only, the whole fam went salt free for years, I talked to the doctor of my kids, and she questioned me on wether we used tinned tuna, tinned tomatoes and such, and said that was enough. During covid though the little one did baking and finally finished off the last pack that must have been bought more than 5 years ago, and we had to buy new salt!!! LOL!

I hide treats in the cabinet with the baking supplies because I know that no one else will be looking in there :)

My mother hid "her" cookies in the broken dishwasher knowing my father would never look in there. She'd buy herself a small bag of Pepperidge Farm cookies each week and ate two a day. Dad gobbles, so the rest of the family shared bags of cheap cookies.

I'll sometimes hide my treats in a picnic cooler, so far that's the only place my family hasn't been able to find them.

I could not fall asleep last night ... I started a new book at 1AM. 7:30 came awfully early.

OH my gosh! You reminded me of a story I need to scrap!
My mom liked to hide treats in the bottom of her double ovens. No one ever looked there, or used the oven. Then, one day a neighbor's oven broke. My dad told the person to come on over and use their oven - without mentioning it to my mom, who was running errands. Needless to say, the smoke detector went off, and there are no more treats in the oven.

i guess that depends on a few things, like how often you make these best ever cakes (when DS searches for recipes, his search keywords usually involve 'best ever' brownies or 'ultimate' apple cake etc does anyone ever look for 'not bad but not great' choc chip cookies etc!?), how big the pinch is and whether you usually make cakes more to share with other people & usually don't have much, if any yourself, but since lockdown there's been more cake & baked stuff here than ever (& it's not for bake sales these days) but it's the kids & DH that have been making them and they don't follow my 'less is more' thinking on salt, sugar etc - uggh why do they run Masterchef and stuff in primetime when we're in lockdown, it just makes them try making more stuff, my balance is way off these days but i do like seeing new fruit & veg kits come out, there are probably like 5:1 kits on icecream etc to fruit & veg but anyway

on a related note, i could confess that baking-wise i usually substitute out at least half the regular sugar or what is in US recipes as confectioners or powdered sugar (it's all just sugar) -i don't really like artificial sweeteners but there's a lot of normal food that you can use like bananas & apple puree, i'll add grated zucchini etc to choc cakes, i add oats of some kind to most things so everything i make usually has less sugar, salt, fat where possible & more fibre - it's a sorry not sorry thing for me, i'm not a chef & most would argue for taste & enjoyment in the moment over health but taste buds adapt & if i'm eating something, i'd rather there was more benefit & less guilt associated with it & less time working it off or risk of needing medical interventions in the future too - it's not going to be a popular opinion but if we're confessing, it's also why i avoid the snack threads!

But see? That's exactly what I need in the snack threads! :giggle
Like the DSD one - Cheryl and Livy mentioned fruits and veggies plates, and I've added that to my list. I also do a cheese plate because of a previous snack thread.

It's a baking thing. Salt actually does do stuff in baking like make the crust darker, prevents staleness, and helping the yeast ferment, but yes, there's tons of salt in packaged food, and the average American (I kinda think the average person overall!) doesn't need a salt shaker. Salt is important to the body, it helps maintain blood pressure. As a nurse, Nick ends up giving out a lot of saline (salt water) to people. In general though, you are so right! A lot of people intake too much - I think the average is 2-3 times what your body needs.

In my house, we have moved to more herbs and spices (without salt) for cooking and I find that overall, the salt consumption in our home has decreased! It's also why I don't worry about salted versus unsalted butter. Most baking recipes call for the salted butter and salt, but I just add the salt. Other family members I have use salt and pepper as their seasonings, so I think it's another of those knowledge things. We don't teach how to use more flavor, and less salt. If that makes sense.

Anyway. Sorry for my own soapbox:hide. :carryon

I drink Diet Coke out of 16 oz bottles and never drink the last swig. Sometimes my son drinks it but it mostly just goes in the trash.

My Mom always poured her Pepsi into a glass, so us girls would beg to have the last dribble in the bottle. I can remember standing there with the bottle tipped up waiting for those precious drops to hit my lips. BITD my sisters and I only had a soda on Sundays when we had dinner with my great-aunt and uncle.

I keep a bag of snack size chips in the car in case I am hungry on the way home from work.
