DS had to upload some photography for Art last week and if we are looking for a brightside in the whole learning from home experience for parents, this was one of them for me - it had to include 'small things' and give consideration to perspective and scale and he showed me these that he set up and did himself later in the day and i don't know that i'd have heard about this otherwise. (The backstory was DD asked me later what was so urgent that her brother flung the study door open while she was in a maths zoom looking for lego people?)

Anyway I think it was last MOC that @FarrahJobling, our resident photographer extraordinaire, showed us her shoot thru photography ideas and some of us mentioned the Lensball either already having one or getting one. For a while i collected photography hack ideas like this BoredPanda article/round-up discusses and tried a few. I know i did a version of this one below although my DD was less enthusiastic about it and not looking at the time but i came across it this week looking thru my 'still to scrap Xmas photos'.

So my question this week is have you tried any of those photo hacks or other ones that you were either particularly impressed with or that just plain didn't live up to the expected result?

Not really hacks, but there are so many functions on the iPhones that I didn't even know about. I took an iPhoneography Class and learned so much. The newer iPhones - I have the 11 Pro - are pretty amazing with the camera quality and functions.

Well, I did do a couple of photo walks with photographers, who shared all kinds of information. The first one was in a big group of scrapbookers and I learned quite a bit there. Then I met up with a photographer, who is so super talented and happened to be dating my sister's roommate. Somehow he got roped into doing a photo walk/session with me and Olivia. They were both cool experiences, but I'd have to look through the photos again to see if there were any hacks. Oh, and I did have a high school classmate that was a photographer, and when he came into town, we went to a few cemeteries and abandoned properties to take photos.

I know that I bought special clip on lenses for my smart phone, that did really cool effects, like fish bowl and such, which you can really do with most smart phones and/or apps these days anyway so they are just hanging out in the old technology drawer where all wires go to die.

I've done shoot-through photos, and here's a layout I made with one:

Here's a layout I made with the fish eye lens, so it was less about technique and more about just clipping the lens on:

I love this photo technique of blurring the background/shallow depth of field:

I do love experimenting now and then with different perspectives:

I love reflections in photos, especially details such as this one because they had so much more to the story:

My church had a camera club group 12-13 years ago. The couple that led the group were not pro photographers but did enter photos into contests and even won some blue ribbons. We did learning basic stuff about the camera to hacks as you call them. One member (who couldn't make it every month) was a photographer in his military days so had a lot of experience using film cameras and he related how he made the change to digital and how he learned PS.

We did a field trip to a city park about 20 miles away that had a covered bridge among other things. Focus was to get the hang of outdoor/landscape photos. In winter time we did more things inside like photo shoots of fruits/vegetables. We always had "assignments" of things to try including some of the things Cheryl posted. I went on a cruise while in this club and used a lot of things we had talked about when taking photos, especially the day I chose to not do an excursion. We were at a place that had lots of shops in the port that was specifically built for Carnival cruise ships to dock. I explored there and played with the camera. And my absolute favorite photo from the cruise was taken using tips I learned from them on a previous stop.

Club members even had a hallway in the church where we could display our photos. I had 3 enlarged and displayed and they now hang in my living room.... including that cruise photo.

To this day I still tend to think outside the box when taking photos because that is the best way to learn how to use your camera... yes I still prefer a camera since my hands aren't steady enough for using a small lightweight phone. Can't even use a small lightweight camera... my hands shake!

I've seen a lot of hacks on Tik Tok, but have yet to try any.

Mom took this photo of me wayyyy before the take your mirror outside trend:

Oh my gosh! I had forgotten about this. You know I have a thing about mirrors anyway . . . how many are in the house? It's a collection almost competing with my lamps. Bwahahahahaha! Also, you are too cute! You loved that tie-dye shirt!

that is so cool! there's a local camera club here that one of the shopping centres has a deal with like that, it's great to see local people and their (amateur) work on display! it must mean so much & make them all so proud just like you. great story!

I’ve only tried the hacks from here at The Lilypad. One hack I need to try is taking a selfie from a ridiculously high angle to make it super flattering haha

lol One thing I don't miss about no travel opportunities recently & in the foreseeable future is not avoiding tourists with selfie sticks !

My photography hacks these days are more about how to fix my bad photos in photoshop. :giggle

Ok - hacks - hmmm… the thing I use the most whether with my dslr or my phone’s camera, is to make sure the focus is on the face (eyes with a dslr). Unless, you want a subject blurred. This usually helps with lighting problems also although not on the phone as much. Honestly I have forgotten so much about photography because I just don’t use my dslr since the kids have moved off and I’m not shooting sports events.
