So last weekend our little flock grew by 2 birds and they were a boys pets for the last year or so, this family said, even if we don't think one of them looks anywhere close to a year old but he'd sadly since lost interest in them apparently and that's how we came to adopt them.
DH said the boy looked about my son's age, around 10 or 11 and apparently he never named the birds so they came to us nameless.
Trying to agree on appropriate names for them was almost all we talked about as a family this week and we couldn't understand how they could have gone without names for like a year, especially seeing my son will find a stick at the beach or on a hike and give it a name, & both he & DD always named their toys & even when she went through a rock painting stage in the last year, was naming rocks.

So my topic for today is are you someone that seems to automatically name things (will any name do or does it have to be appropriate) or could you leave a pet nameless for a year and be fine with it?

My car's name is CJ (after the start of the licence plate) so i think you can tell i need things to have names!

Pets, yes, they get a name right away. I had Peyton's name picked out before I even knew if I was going to be getting a boy or girl.

Inanimate objects, nope, don't name many of them. Only one I can actually think of that I named was my first GPS unit many years ago. It was Hannah. When I replaced it, the new one was also Hannah.

We name things around here. Our cars have been "Green Jellybean", "Sprite", and "Big Red". Munchkin named that last one. It was that or Speedy - and I don't need any ideas! Stuffed animals have names. Heck, some days Matthew names his lego creations that will be destroyed the next day. Not always the most creative names (See Big Red above) but still named. A pet is named, although the name may change. Athena the cat was not Athena at first, but the other names we tried just didn't quite fit her. So, we renamed her after a week, and Athena fit and has stuck.

Oddly enough, I've never named my camera though. Have you?

I don't name things and haven't actually ever had the opportunity to name a pet. The cats I grew up with were named by my sister or the shelter and the cat we had in the late 90's also came with a name.

But my husband names his cars. The one he had when we met was named Jimmy. The first one we bought together we named Blaubear which is derived from the Swedish word for blueberry (it was blue and his brother is married to a Swedish woman) and the one he bought two years ago he named Wilby Wrightback.

Names are very important! When we "inherited" our dog, Daisy, my husband didn't like her name, but I did. She's a perfect "Daisy" and I'm so glad I didn't let him talk me into changing it. We're getting a cat when we move and i already have a boy's name picked out - I really want a male cat. If we get a female, I'm not as sure of the name.

My oldest gd and I already have a list of her possible baby names. My youngest dd always names her cars.

We named our birds while driving home from the pet store but we don't name anything else.

My son named his kitten Archimedes, which was shortened to Archie, then he become Pokkle as he would tap things with his paw in a pokkle pokkle sound/way, then he became Sokkle as DD wanted to call him Socrates instead of Archimedes. Then hubby called him Sykose which is Afrikaans for stockings, but kinda sounds like Sokkle? So yes, our pets get names and nicknames and then new names and evolving names and they still all come when called.

We name most everything, sometimes not very creatively and sometimes inappropriately, but most cars, pets, and some household things have a name.
We had a cat who was really crazy named Ozzy, one that accidently went through a spin in a dryer named Fluffy. There have been some other fun ones, but currently:
Our black cat is named Jeffery...DH named him and it was just a name he pulled out of the air.
Our white cat is named Blizzard...because he's white lol
And when I say most things are named, our dog is kind of named :giggle. When we got him from the rescue organization as a puppy, his given name was Sinatra (he has blue eyes). We wanted to rename him, but could not agree on anything and called him pup which evolved in to pup pup. So for the last 7 years he's been Pupup.

Our white cat is named Blizzard...because he's white lol

I can relate... My first Havanese was black with a little white spot on his chest. Named him after my favorite drink which could also relate to his color... aka Pepper.

My screen name and email also came from him. Hava (short for Havanese) Dr Pepper (my favorite drink and his AKC name).

I can't believe they went without names for so long! That's just weird! Lol! Growing up we had one zillion barn cats and those barn cats made more barn cats... you get the point. We named them all, but man after awhile we ran out of names! At one point we had a cat (my favorite one) that was named "Medium" because, well... he was the medium sized kitten. :giggle

We name all the critters that appear at our pond. Ally the alligator, Snowy the white heron, Jerry the Heron (because an old neighbor had the same name, different spelling. The 3 cranes are Larry, Moe, & Curly. We haven't named the Ospreys, Eagles, ducks, or parakeets yet because there are just too many.

Pets always got names but never cars or computers. I was going to name my first iMac but never got around to it even though I loved it to death!

We name things and pets too! Then there are nicknames as well. I name all my cars too, since my very first one. Occasionally, we name objects in the house, but I can't think of any we have currently.
