I never liked games much as a child, preferring to do almost anything else but I had no siblings either. Nor do I recall ever playing games with my friends. My parents and Nana often played cards in the evening but my father was really good and Nana often left in tears because it was clear she was losing and my father wouldn't let her leave. She left! He was a real sickly about sticking it out as was husband #1. Same results when we played Canasta in England. I was bored, Nana stormed off and he said we had to finish. Ha! try telling that to 2 women.

With my boys we went from Snakes and Ladders to Parchesi and then Monopoly. By the time the 2nd child was ready for Monopoly, older one was into Dungeons and Dragons and Risk. He also learned chess and tried unsuccessfully to teach me and my xh was a poor player so he wasn't too interested. LOL My son did spend hours & hours playing with the neighbor boy in Tehran. We never played board games or cards with any adults in my first marriage but when I was divorced I played Monopoly here in the US with adult friends a lot. We used my Arabic Monopoly set which I still have. No cheaters fortunately!

Sorry to hear that your gaming experiences weren't the best. When we were first married we had game nights with other young married couples, but as we all started having kids it got harder until we stopped doing it. I really miss those game nights and wish hubby would want to start doing them again. He used to love playing games, but not so much anymore. Maybe I should let him win more often without him knowing I'm letting him... :giggle

Well thats great b/c after a bunch more googling, I ordered the Sushi game last night! It should be here end of next week or the week after, given all the public holidays & shutdowns even though it's only coming from near my mum's place in Syd about 2 hours away, such is lockdown life!

We don't have party, just Sushi Go. But now I want to get Party after googling! It's one of munchin's favortie games. He has been teaching his friend so they can play it.
 
Our latest favorites are kickstarter games, and I haven't checked to see if they are for sale. I imagine they are!

On Tour: Roll a dice, get your band tour as far across the nation as possible, but the catch is everyone plays on the same numbers and you have rules about where to place the numbers.
Gardens of Babylon: Tile building game.
The City. Card game. DH calls it a deck builder, and it's similar but moves faster.

Non-Kickstarter Games:
Sushi Go
Quixx (This one has the rules and stuff online somewhere if you have dice.) It's an easy fun game that goes pretty quick.
Play Nine! A card game. Goes quick - about 30-45 minutes depending on how fast munchkin plays.
Pandemic. Yep. I enjoy this game! Cooperative game
Forbidden Island. Easier to win than pandemic. Cooperative game
Settlers of Catan.
Blokus
Rack-O (this is an old game! But they've rereleased it.)
Kingdomino. A twist on dominoes
Guillotine - card game. A little morbid - you are an executioner in France during the Reign of terror. It's fun though!
Life Twists and Turns. This is the best life game and so fun! I think it's out of print though, so thrift stores or ebay?

I told munchkin I'd teach him risk and monopoly this week.
I'd take a picture of our game setup, but I'm a little embarrassed! We have so many!!

Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza, my daughter and I loved it! My hubby not so much. He likes strategy and he thought it was a dumb game. My daughter and I think it's hilarious!!!!!!

We have blokus travel and regular.... and we LOVE them both!!!!!!
Sushi go - love

My sister has ZOMBIE 15 which I loved but they don't make it anymore.
 
We like Hand & Foot pretty much for 12 and up I would guess. It is a card game for teams. We would play every other week or so before the Stay at home order. Trying to figure out how we can play it virtually. I have gotten several couples hooked on it! It is best to play with 4 people (5 decks of cards), but you can play with 6 (7 decks)....a lot of shuffling but fun strategies!

You've got some I haven't heard of... I'll have to check em out! Quixx is the only one right now that my hubby likes... probably because he's really good at it! :giggle I don't mind though because if it gets him to play then I'm happy! We also have Rack-O and enjoy it! When my youngest was in first grade, I used to take it over to the school and play it with the kids when I was helping them with math. It's a good one for helping the younger kids learn their numbers.

Hand and Foot is a version of Canasta in which each player is dealt two sets of cards, known as the "hand" and the "foot".

  • The game is typically played by four players in two partnerships of two players each, although it can also be played with numbers of players ranging from two to eight, individually or in partnerships.
  • Use one deck more than the number of players, so for a four-handed game you'd use five 52-card decks plus ten jokers (270 cards).
  • Each player attempts to draw 22 cards to start the game, placing them in two piles of 11 each. If 22 cards are drawn, that partnership receives 200 extra points. The first pile is called the "hand", and the second pile is called the "foot". Initially, each player plays from their "hand", while leaving the "foot" face-down on the table. The "Foot" is not used until the "hand" is empty.
  • When drawing from the draw pile, draw two cards at a time. Or, instead of taking the top 2 cards from the draw pile, the player may elect to take the top 5 cards on the discard pile.
  • The discard pile may only be taken by a player when the top card can be played during that turn. The other 4 cards may not be used until the following turn.
  • In Hand and Foot, a set is formed with 7 or more cards, starting with 3 of the same (or 2 of the same and 1 wild) and will take one of the following forms:
    • A red set contains only natural cards (no wildcards). When you make a red set, square up the cards into a pile and top it with a red card. (Some rules refer to this as a clean set), worth 500 points.
    • A black set, contains a mixture of natural and wild cards. When you make a black set, square up the cards into a pile and top it with a black card. (Some rules refer to this as a dirty set) and is worth 300 points.
  • There is no distinction between jokers and twos except for points. Jokers are 50 points, 2’s are 20 points; both are wild, and may be mixed freely.
  • A mixed set must always contain more natural than wild cards.
  • A 7-card clean set cannot be extended. A 7-card dirty set can be extended.
  • A game is played as four hands. The initial meld requirements are based on the hand number, and not the team's score:

These are the basic rules....It is easier to learn with "hands on". Too bad you live so far away (I think you are in Utah?) If I am ever in Mapleton visiting my daughter, I can show you then...I would even be willing to facetime you as I play!
