January 26 - Duotone Technique

Such a fun challenge!

Somehow, I had a horrible time with this challenge - probably because I'm trying to learn PS CC at the same time, moving from PSE - not quite bright at choosing this month, huh? So I gave up after 4 hours because I couldn't get what I saw in my head and went to the "short-cut" in PS-CC. Next month when I have more time, I'll work on the technique! I think I'm in brain-fade by now!

OK... I guess I need help... It is not working for me, like I know it should... I get to create gradient map and it turns my photo to a negative... if I click the same icon again , it then returns it to a high contrast B & W...what it should be... I click OK... But I do not get the pop up window with the gradient map sliders, and choices.. If I just go to gradient, it is a whole differ thing... has to be in the Map to work ... Have looked at your screen shot and I can see , when you change the color you can see it ... but I can't see how to get that drop down gradient map thing... thus cannot change the color... in my layers palette I have a small icon of a gradient map with sliders, but it does nothing, it is linked to a white mask... Working in PSC5 ... going to read through this thread and see if anyone else had this problem....

hey Liz, to use the gradient tool, go to the bottom of your layerspanel and click on the little circle that is half white, half black (adjustment layers). In the fly-out menu choose 'gradient map...' (second from the bottom)
A new layer is created and the properties panel should open (if you do not see it, go up to the tab 'Window' click on it and choose properties). In the properties panel click once on the strip with the changing color. The Gradient Editor will open and here you can change the colors.
If you need to make changes to your gradient you can also open the editor by double clicking on the thumbnail of the gradient in your layerspalette.
To make sure it only affects your photo, use a clipping mask.

Well stuck with Artisan 5 and got something that resembled something similar, but not really impressed with the results for the effort. (Ironically I opened my very dusty version of PSE - hoping to learn, but not there yet -- and it wouldn't do this effect with this photo at all. Just gave me variations of gray until the whole photo was grayed out no matter the colours I picked. Just played with another photo and it worked, so not sure what happened) Anyways here is my attempt.

I really enjoyed playing with gradients for this. I found a really awesome effect for this photo (in Photoshop in the color harmonies) -- but it was more than 2 colors so saving that one. For this challenge I ended up with a purple and teal choice.

Great learning for me! I've done this in a different way, but could alter both colours :)
I'm was running into a problem though. I dragged my new photo (with gradient clipped together with it), and it kept making the background of my new page the highlight colour, and refusing to let me add any papers etc to cover it.
I stopped having this issue when I went back to my original, and flattened my picture. I could then move it to my final page. Only prob with this is I can't fine tune it there. I have to go back to my original to change anything colourwise and then reflatten and redrag it back to my final page.
Maybe that helps someone else? :)
(I should add that I'm working with a REALLY old version (2.0 I think) of photoshop, haha)
Love the way everyone jumps in to help each other out. Thanks for sharing this. I hope you were happy with the final product.

Have you had any luck? When you choose gradient map from the adjustments menu it will turn your photo to grayscale. When the pop up menu comes up on the initial time, instead of clicking OK, try double clicking on the sliding scale and it should bring up the gradient edit menu.
