In love with places I've never been to

So, Dh and I had a rare opportunity to go out sans child last night. We got to the restaurant and check in at the host stand. "Do you have a rewards membership with us?" I responded "No". And that was the end of it - no info on what it was. So, while I waited, I went to the website, and found out about the membership, signed up, and was prompted to download the App for a dinner coupon.

Sigh. I get so tired of every place I go having an App to download. I've downloaded 4 this week! Hobby Lobby; McDonalds; BJ's Restaurant; and YMCA. The YMCA one is the most useful since it has hours and scheduling on it. The others - blah. Just needed for a coupon.

What about you? Do you have a ton of store apps (As I call them) on your phone? Do you refuse to play that game (Usually me! Hence no yogurt app from that visit this week)? Or do you enjoy them?

I don't mind using them if the coupon is significant enough. Usually once that's done, I'll delete the app from my phone. Sometimes I don't bother. It's too much of a hassle to sign up for minimal rewards.

I guess I'm not doing enough variety of shopping and eating out, because I'm not very aware of this as a thing. But as I thought about it more, I remembered I have gotten a few apps for stores/restaurants over the last couple of years.

The first two on my list are the only ones that came to mind before I had to open up my phone and page through it to remember what others I have. :giggle

Ruby Tuesday -- it's my kids' favorite family restaurant (the only sit-down place everyone likes)
Michael's -- I started using it when I got really into knitting this past year.
Rita's Italian Ice -- my dairy allergic daughter's favorite frozen treat place (and my other kids like it a lot too)
Wegman's -- I shop there every week and tried using the app for a while a couple of years ago, then had some trouble with its grocery list feature, and haven't opened it again since. I've just been using the Apple Reminders App for my grocery list. I'd like to try the Wegmans app again though, so I can use coupons occasionally, so thanks for the reminder.
Giant (grocery store) -- It's my closest grocery store, so sometimes I run in there for something quick instead of Wegmans. Their app is awful unless it has improved since I last opened it a year or two ago.
Tropical Smoothie -- This is one of the worst apps ever. At least it was when I tried to use it last year. I haven't even visited the place this year yet. You can tell I don't bother to delete apps, judging by the list, right? :P
Clothes Mentor -- a resale shop near us. I don't remember this app being useful for anything. It's a good store though!
Lafayette Hotel in San Diego -- It was fun to read the info in the app when we planned our trip to San Diego last January, but while were there, I found little use for it. I did use it to look up the room descriptions when we decided we wanted to switch.
Starbucks -- This one should be the most useful, because my older daughter loves frappucinos. I gave her a gift card for Christmas and then entered it into this app. But it has been so difficult and confusing to use; I still haven't figured it out.
Panera -- my all time favorite restaurant, although I rarely eat there anymore. Haven't opened the app in ages, but my friend tells me she uses it a lot to order on her way there so the food is ready when she arrives. I still show my old reward card from 2008 when I order my food; I wonder if it's incorporated into the app?
Joann -- fabric store. I don't even remember downloading this one. I never go there because I don't sew, but we bought some fabric last Halloween for my older daughter's costume.

Oh! Here's one of the most useful apps I've ever used. Not exactly a store or restaurant, but an amusement park. Kings Dominion, here in Virginia. We got season passes for the first time this summer, and the app has several useful features: helping you keep track of where you parked, describing all the rides and telling the current wait time, tracking yourself on the map in real time, storing my family's passes, so I don't need to carry the cards, etc etc etc. To make it perfect, there is free Wifi in the park. I was so excited when I learned that on our first visit this spring. :D

Okay, I flipped through my 6 pages of phone apps twice and I think that covers all the stores/restaurants and I think I found all I have. I'm not opposed to them; I just don't shop in a lot of places. Of all the apps I listed, the only one I've opened in several weeks is Rita's and Kings Dominion (both on the same day a few weeks ago, I think!).

There are other ways to get discounts that I use though. One is email. Most of my email is store newsletters I subscribe to just so I have the sales and coupon info available to me when I decide to go shopping. I spend time deleting all that mail though, so if I could get sale info and coupons through an app instead, I think that would be better.

The newest way (for me) is that I've accepted text messaging from a few places that inform me of discounts. Sonic (fast food burger place my kids love) sends a text every Monday, Redbox (movie rental place) once or twice week, Rue21 (clothing store). I like getting text notifications because they're easier to dismiss than emails. Of course, less can be crammed into a text message, so there again, an app could be better. Text messaging is great for notifications about things like medication being ready for pick up at the pharmacy and that an expected package is due to arrive today.

How did I just write so much about this? :rollin

The only apps I have downloaded are grocery store apps, banking apps, school related apps (Remind, ClassDojo, etc) and coupon saving apps (iBotta, etc.). But the reward ones, I will only download for the coupon and then delete the app.

I have the Hobby Lobby and Michael's apps, but I find it's faster to dig their coupons out of my email. JoAnn coupons are easier in the app.

Kohl's has a really fantastic app that includes my rewards card, my Kohl's cash, my rewards certificates, and all of my coupons. (The only one it doesn't include is the peel-off one from the mailer.)

I use the Costco app to review warehouse deals (when I've forgotten my booklet), the Starbucks app to check star expiration, and the Panera Bread app to order and pay for Rapid Pickup.

Target is a pretty good one, for the Cartwheel coupons, until it changed so that I had to log in every single time I use it. (My email is 17 characters before the @, and it's tedious and painful to do it in the store. It might be fixed now, but I haven't gone in to check. It just doesn't feel worth it when I don't go to Target much anymore.)

They fixed the Barnes and Noble app, so now when we're in the store, I can scan the books my kids want, and see if they are discounted at barnesandnoble.com; if they are, I can add them to my cart and they are really there. (It used to be that the cart in the app was not the same as my online cart.) Then I have them saved when the next 20% off coupon comes in my email.

(I think those are all the ones that I actively use, although I have a bunch more. I'm really an email bargain shopper, not an app one.)

I have several apps of my phone...Cartwheel (for Target), Hobby Lobby, The LiveCard, Pink (Victoria Secrets), Kirkland's Spin to Win, Sprouts, Cyclebar, McDonald's. Way too many! I should put them all in one box on my phone.

Only store apps on my phone are Wal-Mart, Lowe's and Hobby Lobby. I had downloaded Joann's 5 years ago and my cousin used the coupon when we were shopping in the store. I deleted it when I got this phone since there isn't a Joann's near me.

The one I use the most is Wal-Mart to scan my receipts. I do like being able to look something up from a previous purchase if I'm in the store. I use Lowe's the same way as well. I don't shop at Hobby Lobby much anymore since I'm not paper scrapping.

I get so tired of people asking for my phone number. When I ask them why - they say they just assumed that I had a rewards card (i.e. J. C. Pennys). I only use those for CVS, Walgreen's and Michael's because they're the only stores that I can see the rewards for and they're worthwhile. I'm sure there are others - but these are the ones I regularly use.

I have quite a few rewards cards but only 1 app and that is for Chick-fil-A. You can order through the app and then pick it up via the drive through. It does remember your calendar card so you get the monthly free thing.

I use a few...most often Kroger, WalMart, and Starbucks (love my star rewards!!). I also have one for teacher discounts and I use my Sheetz card occasionally. I just redeemed $5 I earned at Old Navy and ended up getting 2 dresses for $11. I enjoy them if it's somewhere I shop often, but I use Ebates on my computer more than any app or card to get cash back. A lot of times, if I need something specific from WalMart, I will order and pay for it online and use Ebates, then just pick it up at the store.

I have banking ones, my main grocery store and the liquor store app. That's it. The liquor store app is great when buying wine as it tells you the ratings for different wines and which stores have it in stock.

I don't know, but I love it!

Oh! I totally forgot about text discounts. I get those too - Papa Murphey's is my favorite!

until it changed so that I had to log in every single time I use it.
Yes. So this! And I can never remember my password, so it's obnoxious!

Say what?!?! Sprouts has an app?

I don't shop at Hobby Lobby much anymore since I'm not paper scrapping.
I went there because I had heard that they had the letters for the letterboards on clearance. They didn't. But I got some nice pencil crayons on clearance, and a new magnetic whiteboard for the fridge. My kid? His new favorite store he declared. He bought 2 pinwheels (outside ones), a little shield, and an art kit. And made me walk all around the store so he could check everything out! Good thing for that 8 year old that Hobby Lobby has free air conditioning, and it was 111 outside!

This sounds cool! And super handy.

I don't have any store apps on my phone because I don't like keeping a lot of stuff on my phone. I do have eBay, which I guess is technically a STORE app lol, but I'll delete it once I stop selling on there next month.

I have a few, but by far the most used are JoAnns and Michaels.... gotta have the coupons! I also have the Meijer app (my grocery store). Otherwise I sometimes will check for coupons as I'm in line for a store checking out, but mostly I just forget.

I must know more... is that the name of the app? "the liquor store app" Cause I've always wanted something like this to help me select a new bottle of wine occassionally instead of just buying the same one that I know I like. :) I'm off to search the app store now...

I specifically went to Hobby Lobby to find outside items the end of last month. They had absolutely nothing. I just needed something inexpensive for this summer since a bush that the landscapers planted last year died. They took it out and will not replace until fall because of the 90 degree temps we had at the time. A pinwheel would have been ok. They had lots of 4th of July stuff and not a pinwheel in there as well. The last 3 or 4 times I have gone there looking for something they have always carried in the past, I have not found it. And, for me it is a trip to another town in the first place. So now I only go there if I am in that town and/or going to other stores as well. Maybe it is just my Hobby Lobby but it just ain't what it used to be.

That's so frustrating Rene! Yeah, ours had all the Spring stuff on sale which included the pinwheels. Now, the scrapbooking stuff? It's only 2 aisles, but it's those half aisles at my store? So really hardly anything. It's mostly house/outside decor.

Not sure where you live Karen. The one I use is for our BC Government Liquor Stores, although I would think that there would be others available for different states/provinces.

I was in ours yesterday and they had the letterboards in all different sizes and big bins of letters on clearance - 50% off. I am kicking myself for not picking up a couple of them and some letters!

I have the Smiths app for my digital coupons and that's it. It seems like most app discounts are minimal and I can just open do a quick google search and get most coupons from their website. That's what I do for Hobby Lobby 40% off coupons.
