when the internet is down?

OrkLGfb.png

Yep, I freak out! Our internet went out on Friday mid morning and was out for most of the day and evening. It came on for about 10 minutes and was out again. We all about died! I know it's silly to admit that we depend on the internet for so much, but we do. My hubby was trying to work from home, but couldn't without internet. I was trying to post layouts and leave love in the gallery. My girls wanted to watch Netflix since they both were recovering from having teeth pulled last week.

It was kind of comical. I was running up and down the stairs rebooting the router and coming back up to see if any one could get on the internet. I even went over to my neighbor's house to see if their internet was working since we have the same provider. Hers was working fine and our ISP said there wasn't an outage. I ran diagnostics on my router and all kinds of stuff. Late that evening, I was about to order a new router, when I decided to call the ISP again. This time they acknowledge that there was an outage that was affecting some customers sporadically. He did some stuff on his end and I did some stuff on mine. He said that they had to do some more stuff on Monday when the regular crew came in but I'm hoping all is well and I won't get kicked off the internet again. Heaven forbid I have to clean the house... hehe

How about you? Do you freak when the internet goes out?

Yup! I go in to panic mode even if I wasn't doing anything online at the time! It's so sad how vital it is to everything we do. Same when the electricity goes out!

lol I love that meme about the house being clean! I try to stay on top of the house, but it definitely helps when I can't get distracted by the interwebs! ;)

Absolutely! I am online for one thing or another all the time, but I am harmless compared to my son who is a gamer and plays online.

If I plan on streaming something in the evening and the internet goes off (which happnes rarely - thank God) and my plan is thwarted, I get so angry, I need to get a hold on my temper really. After all this is a first world problem, right?

I'm more calm about it than the kiddos are, especially Daniel. Well, except if I'm working and trying to meet a deadline. Then I get pretty irritated if I can't upload or download. For three weeks, we lost internet on a Friday evening. That's his time to come home from school and relax and every time the internet was out. A couple of times it was only for a short bit, but then the other time it was out until the next morning. I usually end up just scrapping, and then just wait to do the internet stuff later.

We lost power last week during the day and with it the internet as well - so there was no scrapping or doing anything with the computer offline. It was only off for about 30 minutes. I'm reading the Harry Potter series with Daniel, so we sat down and started reading aloud. Olivia was reading her own book at the time. It made the time go by fast.

I do have my desktop hooked up to a battery backup, so if we only lose power, the modem and router stay on because they are hooked up to the battery. I only get about 45 minutes with the backup, but at least that's enough to shut down the computer and/or finish up what I'm doing on the internet.

I've really been trying to help Daniel especially deal with using the internet. I am off and on the computer all day because I have to take breaks with my back, but he can sit for hours at a time if no one interrupts him. So we are using alarms and calendar reminders for him to remember to do certain things each day and to use timers for internet use. It's summer, so I'm okay with him doing a lot of online stuff IF he sprinkles that with reading and other activities.

OH! I remember too . . . we have used tablets/phones before using our data plan (if we were nearing the end of a cycle and had plenty of data) to watch Netflix and surf the net while our home internet was out.

I agree that it's good for us and our kids to have a healthy relationship with the internet. I find that I get pretty onery if I've been on the internet or watching too much tv and I have to make a conscious effort to make sure I get outside and stretch a bit each day. Last week the girls both had teeth pulled so I let them have all the screen time they wanted, but this week I'm going to get back on the band wagon and make sure they turn off netflix, social media and phone games and get out and do something physical. Megan has a soccer camp every evening this week so it'll be easy for her, but Aspen quit her job and all her friends are out of town so it's going to be harder to get her offline. I may have to block her cell phone and go unplug the router and hide the cord to get her offline... hehe!

I lost internet on Saturday afternoon of Super Bowl weekend this year. With my poor eyesight surfing the net with my phone just doesn't work and of course Persnickety Prints was having a 1 day sale on that Sunday. It was not easy buying those prints on the phone at all!

I took my modem in to the provider on Monday (local ISP with main office in my town) and got a new one. The modem I had was so old, they hadn't used that model in several years. Got home and got connected. That lasted until Friday about noon. So I went back to the ISP and told them they needed to get someone out to look at the lines because I had a new modem and it wasn't the router or computer. I also told them that I would not go another weekend without internet or they would be reducing my bill for days lost. Service guy got there about 3:30. The modem checked out as being good with their tester. He checked the lines in the basement and thought the very old connectors down there could be the problem but wanted to check the outside line before doing anything.

Turns out a squirrel had chewed through the line near the pole. That had caused intermittent issues for many months but the week I had the major problems we had snow which turned to ice on the lines (Tues-Thurs). On Friday it was warmer and sunny and the ice melted... it then got into the line and zapped my internet.

He got me all hooked up to a new line and it has been perfect ever since... well except the 2 hours that the whole town lost power one Saturday afternoon in April.

I am thankful that my TV wasn't out as well (same provider) that weekend or I would have gone nuts! One reason I am so glad I don't have to depend on the internet to watch TV.

Ah, that was a big question for us when we went on the cruise. You had to pay for internet access and for cell phone access. So we went dark - as we decided we would rather spend the $200+ on something else that trip. When we were in port in Alaska, I could use the phone for those few hours. It was quite relaxing to not be tied to them. And those social media sites got along just fine without me.

Those pesky squirrels... who would have thought!

I die because that means nothing will work since we no longer have cable LOL

This exactly. We had to go rent a movie on redbox... I know first world probs.... hehe

I am so use to the internet being out since we live in the sticks and can't get cable internet or fiber optics. I normally will do my layouts and make a list of what needs to be uploaded.

My big problem is my internet is not very fast and it takes too darn long to download a kit.

This.
I am pretty chill about it, for a few hours anyway. I clean or read or go somewhere or scrap without distraction, but my son thinks the world is ending...no YouTube, no gaming *the horror*. We have unlimited data on our phones, so we can always access stuff through them when we need to and we could use them as a hot spot for a little while if we absolutely needed to. Now, I do get a little anxious if it goes on for more than a day or so.

Our house definitely has a collective scream (mostly from my gamer boys) when the internet goes out. I don't really need it too much most of the time as I mostly use it to download kits from here on very rarely to watch something on Netflix. My hubby watches a lot more TV than I do, so he would be annoyed to not have TV (it's Comcast, so tied to internet). My boys would definitely be the worst as they love to play games on their computers AND talk to friends while doing that. If they aren't doing that, they also love to watch videos on YouTube or Netflix. They are junkies for sure!

Well, we sometimes have a bit of an issue with our service, but I remind myself that I grew up WITHOUT internet, cable, or cell service, so yeah, we will survive. LOL. And my home studio which I am just beginning to put together will progress much more quickly. AND, I did my challenges already, hahahhaa

My cousin moved on 6/11. She had her cable/internet hooked up on the 8th. The guy made sure all connections for cable were working and even had the router connected to the internet. The day after she moved in, she went to log on to her computer and there was no internet. She found the router name and password, tried logging in to it again and it still wouldn't work. She has contacted the guy that sold her the router (he also works at the internet/cable company and does security camera setups on the side) and he hasn't gotten back to her. So she is still without internet and is in the middle of selling her house. Yesterday a title company needed documents emailed to them and she couldn't do it. The documents needed bank information so she went to the bank, they helped her fill in what was needed and sent on the documents for her. She also can't print from the computer either since the printer needs wifi which isn't working.

She does have an ipad and get on the internet with that but she doesn't want to use up all her data plan so has been using it sparingly.

You never really know how much you use it until you don't have it!!!

well i've learnt through discussions here that our net is way slow by other 1st world standards but when it's out (and when it does happen it's usually a friday arvo/evening and it doesn't come back til sometime saturday like all the people trying to watch netflix crashed it after the tech dept left for the weekend! (j/k)) i feel lost without it anyway - the kids are worse but they get so much done when they lose device privileges for bad behaviour etc and there was some study in the news here this week about boredom being good for kids creativity and such, which seems so true. (and i think my DH is the one in that second meme commenting about how clean the house is but he's worse than all of us without internet! :giggle)
