Journaling:
I am not a native of this state; however, I do consider it to be home. It's where I've lived for the most years - where I met and fell in love with a wonderful man - where we've raised three incredible daughters.
I moved here in 1988 from St. Louis, Missouri on a job transfer. For the first time, I was on my own. I had no idea what to expect. Seasons, for sure, and seasons that I have come to appreciate each for its own distinctive features. Winters that are breathtakingly cold and long, with days so crystal-clear blue the sunlight reflecting from the snow hurts your eyes. Summers that are amazingly warm and bright, with days that seem to last forever as the sun slowly fades in the west. Springs that appear to last only for a day as winter turns to summer with barely a whisper. Falls that increasingly bring perfectly temperate days, free of bugs and filled with amazing color as nature again returns to slumber.
And while I do truly love the climatological seasons of this state, there is one that stands out above them. One that I didn’t even really know or understand until I lived here, when a nine-year-old girl begged to join her friends in a team sport and where a few years later, her 5-year-old sister followed along in her skate steps. That’s when we came to know that Minnesota truly is the State of Hockey. And that hockey is the season, and that there is always a sheet of ice available.
