an I ask how you attached your photo to one of the squares as these aren't layered back grounds?

In photoshop I made a selection with the magnetic lasso tool, made a new layer and colored that selection on the layer. Then clipped the photo to it. There are several layers of the photo, too. Mostly masked out and set to different blend modes. I hope this helps, you can always ask me if things are unclear. <3
