Here's the gist of this story... for our oldest on his 14th bday, he asked for a much larger-than-normal gift, and we made the careful decision to go ahead and get it for him (he wanted a full sized keyboard to play and practice piano at home). This year is our 2nd son's 14th, and we were going to be consistent and get him a bigger-than-normal gift. He is a HUGE gamer, so we had talked much about getting him his own XBOX One. However, this kid is a super saver, and has saved enough money to buy his own. One day in Oct, he came to us and asked if he could buy his own, and then start saving again until he had enough money to buy a TV to play it on. In order to preserve our ability to get this for him for his birthday, we made a deal with him... we would get it for him as an early gift, and he just wouldn't have something from us to open on his actual birthday. Then he could use the money he had saved so far and get his TV, headset, and game that he was wanting. He took us up on it, and was SO proud of his accomplishment to set a goal and save for it! He said "It feels good to have something that is my own that I know I saved hard for. It feels good to have something nice that I know is my own responsibility to take care of." So proud of this kid!
