I had so much to say for this challenge that I needed a two page spread.

Franklin and Marshall College Class of 2022 | August 2018
Leaving home and going to college is a huge Milestone both for the student and the parents. Jim and I dropped Emma off early for a pre-orientation community service program called PIT. Her roommate Elizabeth (Fiz) was already there practicing with the cross-country team. We got Emma all moved in and then said goodbye after the PIT kick-off meeting. I won’t lie -- it was very hard to leave her there knowing that she didn’t know anyone yet or have any close friends. There were tears! After a bit of a rocky start with some homesickness Emma found some great friends.
It was hard for me when Emma wasn’t doing well, but otherwise I was surprised by how okay I was with having an empty nest. It was really good to be able to give my relationship with Jim more undivided attention. Of course, I missed Emma -- especially hugs, and the day to day banter, but we had texts and phone calls, and parent’s weekend and other visits where we got to meet Emma’s friends, Emma B., Alana and Sioni (pictured here) and also Becca. Emma did well academically and joined a sorority -- Alpha Delta Phi.
All in all, a successful year with some moments of painful transition. Time to move out in early May came pretty quickly and it was bittersweet for Emma to say goodbye to her friends, but she was looking forward to time at home.
We made it through the first year!
