Dear Jonas
Congratulations on your 18th birthday. Today you are officially an adult.
I hope you are healthy and well and the world is still healthy in 2039.
Our Earth is not so healthy anymore and today it was announced that the Doomsday Clock is at 90 seconds to midnight, the closest we've ever been to an apocalypse.
What all plays a role here?
Global warming of course, we all try to do something about it, but there are still those who believe that global warming is a myth.
In February 2021, about 2 months before your birth, Russia invaded neighboring Ukraine, a tragedy for the Ukrainian people because the Russians bomb many civilian targets. Now that Leopard tanks will be delivered, Russia is also threatening a nuclear war.
Our country also feels this war. Many Ukrainian refugees are being taken in, which means that additional shelters have to be created, because there were already so many refugees from other (civil) war countries.
Gas prices are skyrocketing, and therefore electricity prices, everyone has to save and turn down the thermostat, otherwise it will become unaffordable.
But beautiful things also happened in 2021, because you were born. Your mom was looking forward to you with longing and so were we (omi, papi, mammy, uncle Dennis and aunt Liesje and the rest of the family)
Despite the fact that mom is raising you alone, she is doing a great job and I am sure she will have done the same these past years.
As a first and second grade teacher, she certainly helped you get off to a good start in your school career and instill a love of learning. You are already so curious and you are crawling on a journey of discovery through the apartment and through the nursery. You are so sweet and loved by everyone, you also smile at everyone.
I hope you continued to be so sweet, respectful to your mom, omi, papi and mammy and to your teachers. I hope you are doing well in school, maybe you have already made a career choice?
I hope I'll be there to wish you a happy birthday dear Jonas!
