JOURNALING: A brass ball sits atop a rising granite arc with inscriptions on both sides. Encircling the ball is an arrow depicted in relief. Designed by the children of Columbus, sponsored by Burger King, and executed by sculptor John Mason, this memorial honors the courage and pioneering spirit of the seven astronauts who perished aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger on January 28, 1986. A nearby plaque lists the names of those who perished. Also called “The Challenger Memorial", it is located in Battelle Riverfront Park and was dedicated on the first anniversary of the tragedy. Thank you for sharing this. I had just got to my first duty station in the Air Force on this day. It seriously shook my world..and this is like a closing to something I didn't realize was still open in my heart.
