The-Great-Egg-Exploration - MOC #5-13

Description
JOURNALING: For the past 11 years (2006-2016), a columnist for the Columbus Dispatch has created riddles describing locations in and around Franklin County OH. For the days leading up to Easter, he publishes a riddle a day where he has “digitally” hidden Easter eggs. Participates need to figure out his riddles and submit their answers to the newspaper. A winner is drawn from all the entries with the correct answers and a small prize is awarded. The very first year, my sister took photos of all the places and submitted her entry together with her photos. She got an “honorable mention” in the paper for her creativity: Karon Williams of Columbus didn't win a brunch, but I must single her out for not only identifying all 10 locations but also providing photographs of them.
Since then, she and I have worked together to answer all the riddles (thank you internet!!!). When I visit Ohio each year, we go to the places, take pictures, and create scrapbook pages. This has proven to be a wonderful pastime. It’s so exciting to explore the fascinating places that Joe Blundo, the columnist, memorializes each year. The most fun are the places we’ve never heard about such as Leatherlips Monument, Garden of Constants, or Dawes Arboretum. Thank you, Joe Blundo, for making my yearly trips to Columbus the “Great Egg Exploration”.
Riddle 4 (2009)
His name suggests a cowhide smile;
His monument's a limestone pile
In a shamrock-rich domain.
Golfers claim he makes it rain.
Find the egg where he resides
On a spot that's riverside.
ANSWER: The Leatherlips monument in Scioto Park, 7377 Riverside Dr., Dublin. It commemorates the trustworthy (hence, leather-lipped) Wyandot chief who is sometimes said to curse the nearby Memorial Tournament at Muirfield with rain. The sculpture is composed of slabs of limestone.
RIDDLE 8 (2015)
Today, the smart egg hunter lumbers
Where OSU put up big numbers
And carved out a symbolic path
A step‑by‑step review of math.
This garden s light on bloom and birdie
But a constant pleasure for the nerdy.
ANSWER: The Garden of Constants near Dreese Laboratories at OSU
Riddle 6 (2011)
Locate a place near the number 13
Whose name itself grows so huge and green,
That the famed Nazca Lines have nothing on
The Brobdingnagian graphemes on this lawn.
Now: Pinpoint the circle of lush arborvitae
Where the egg is hidden - virtual and tidy.
ANSWER: The egg is hidden in the letter "O" of the shrubbery display that spells Dawes Arboretum. The arboretum is on Rt. 13 in Licking County.
