We wanted to have a dog, it was clear that we would look at the shelter. It should be a small dog, it had to be child friendly. So we drove to the animal shelter in Münster on a Saturday. What we found there wasn't for us. Big dogs only, and most with pretty bad histories. So keep looking. The next day, it was a Sunday, October 8th, 1994. We drove to the animal shelter in Bielefeld. Just behind the entrance way were two kennels, there were puppies to see. A litter of larger dogs and a litter of small black and tan balls of fur. Oh how cute, but we were looking for an adult dog. Here, too, almost only large dogs were to be seen. Even an Irish wolfhound was there waiting for a new family. We all liked a little Schnauzer mix right away. All the other dogs just didn't speak to us. So we asked about the little Schnauzer mix. It wasn't available, it was only housed there during the holidays. Too bad, what now? After a short consideration we let the puppies be shown to us. What used to be scurrying around now lay in a heap and slept soundly. “They are tired, they were out.” We wanted to see the smaller puppies. The nurse walked in, woke the gang up and a few started running back and forth. One of the black puppies ran to us, that's when it happened. We would like to see it closer. "This is Nicola, a poodle and dachshund mix." She was put in our arms and it was clear that it was our dog. We called her Mira and she has always accompanied us faithfully for almost 16 years.
