JOURNALING (384 words):
I will always remember this beautiful day at Floridatown Park where I took photos of you and your brother as a Mother’s Day gift for your mom. Barely three weeks earlier on Easter Sunday, you went to the emergency room because you had severe back pain. You had a CT scan and were told that you had cancer, with masses on your kidney, spine, and liver. We stood outside in the whipping winds that Easter evening near the emergency room doors waiting for you to come out to be loaded into the ambulance to be transferred to another local hospital for more testing and treatment. Even then, you were smiling and laughing and waving to us all as you were quickly rolled across the tarmac and into the ambulance. You were on quite a bit of pain medication, but I have to say, the way you smiled in the face of this terrible news was less about the pain medicine and more about the way you responded to everything in your life. No, you weren’t always happy. Sometimes you were incredibly sad, or mad, or drowning in depression. Those times would pass, though, and you would be smiling and laughing again. There are so many things that I remember about you. I remember countless thrift shopping adventures, laughing with you until we peed our pants, planning vacations to Disney and Ichetucknee Springs, eating Popeye’s fried chicken, going to crops to scrapbook, scrapbooking at my house and at your house, shopping for all kinds of scrapbooking supplies, and talking on the phone for hours. You became my own personal shopper when my chronic pain limited my activities. You would drop by and always have a little prize or two or three. I remember the final six months of your life. No matter what you faced (some of it was agonizing), you always faced it with this wonderful smile. The last night I was with you, when you were unresponsive, I played all kinds of music. I chose to play Dancing Queen by ABBA. Your eyes flew open! I like to think you heard everything I said to you that night. While your smile had faded in this life, I choose to remember you like this: beautiful and smiling. I will always remember you. Always.
