In 1936, the female first name of Marilyn had reached its peak in popularity, ranking #13 in the United States. Over the years, it became less and less popular. When I was born, the name had definitely taken a downturn. In 2018 it ranked as the 610th most popular girls name in the United States. It is English in origin, meaning "drop of the sea”.
I asked Mom who she named me after. She said that she just liked the name, Mary with the added twist of Lynn. I never cared for my name, but my DH loves it (good answer).
In grade school, I only recall one other classmate named Marilyn. Over the years, any Marilyn I encountered was old, like me. LOL!
