“Framing Nature” exhibit, Harn Museum, 7/7/16; oil on canvas.
Artist Herman Herzog was a well-known landscape painter born in Germany.
He often travelled to Gainesville to visit his son who was teaching at what was to become the University of Florida. He hiked all over the area and created more than 250 oil paintings during his journeys. In this painting “On Alachua Lake”, the low angle of the sun and gathering clouds create a dramatic effect…
… and show Herzog's skills as a painter. The lake itself is no longer in existence but has a very interesting history.
