My Friend The Tree
I wanted to see you again long ago,
My old friend from childhood days.
I had many things to tell you,
And I knew you would understand me.
As a little girl, I already came
To you with all the childhood worries.
I felt safe with you,
And all the sorrows flew away.
When I cried in your arms,
You stroked my hair with your green leaves,
My old friend.
My friend the tree is dead.
It fell in the early dawn.
You fell this morning, I came too late,
You will never sway in the wind again,
You have to lie by the road,
And many who pass by
Do not respect the rest of life,
And tear at your green branches,
Which are dying and leaning towards the ground.
Who will now give me the peace
That I found in your shade?
My best friend is lost,
The one who connected me with childhood.
My friend the tree is dead.
It fell in the early dawn.
Soon a house of glass and stone will grow,
Where you were cut down.
Soon gray walls will rise
Where you lie in the sunshine.
Maybe a miracle will happen,
I will secretly wait for it,
Maybe a garden will bloom in front of the house,
And it will awaken to new life.
But it will still be weak and small,
And even if many years pass,
It will never be the same again.
My friend the tree is dead.
