Watching you cross the monkey bars never gets old. Watching you swing from bar to bar with such ease makes me smile. It is something most parents take for granted; yet in our world the monkey bars is something we were told you would never be able to do when you were diagnosed with Autism at 2 years of age. “He does not have the upper arm strength or the mental capability to ever cross the monkey bars”, they said. The physical therapists told us we might as well give up hope; you would never do half the things that “normal children” do. And for years I believed they were right.
You watched your sister cross the monkey bars, hanging upside down and doing tricks. You longed to join her; I could see it in your eyes. You tried and tried; and only ended up failing.. But my sweet Kman, you never gave up. Then one day out of the blue you did it. You said f*** YOU to Autism, to the doctors and to everyone who said you could not do it. Looking at you now; you would never imagine that the monkey bars would have been an unreachable goal for you. You not only swing with your sister upside down, you skip bars and do pull ups. Your upper body strength is better than most children your age. I admire you, Kai, I truly do. You let nothing stand in your way. It may take you longer to learn to do things then other children. But you let no one tell you what you can and can not do. You laugh in the face of Autism. You shoot for the stars and don’t let anyone stop you. You are my hero!
