Ben, so much has changed in the 8 years between these photos. Then you were only 3 years old. You were just starting to talk after years of speech therapy, and we thought we were on the cusp of an easier time in your childhood. You attended preschool at both a special needs school and a typical preschool. You were happy and affectionate, quick to laugh and give hugs and kisses. You enjoyed music even though you didn’t sing *ever*, and you had the most adorable curly hair.

Now you’re an 11 year old. You talk ALL THE TIME. You have a fantastic vocabulary, but you’re still in speech therapy and need frequent reminders to slow down so that we can understand you. You attend the local elementary school, and in just another year you’ll be off to middle school. (How did that happen already?) Our earlier expectation that things were about to get easier turned out to be false. By the time you were 5, it was clear that there were behaviors you should have outgrown and didn’t. You were diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, ADHD, and eventually a genetic disorder. You haven’t let that hold you back, though—you’re still happy and affectionate, quick to laugh and gives hugs and kisses. Things have finally gotten easier as you’ve developed better self-regulation skills, though it’s still a work in progress. You still enjoy music, even though you never sing. You joined the band in 5th grade, playing a variety of percussion instruments. You’ve come so far in the last 8 years, and we can’t wait to see what your future holds. And just so you know, you still have adorable curly hair!

      this is awesome - i love the kit you chose - the textures and dimension and fun theme are so perfect for his story! beautiful journaling mama! and i love how the text wraps around that awesome framed focal photo! wishing Ben lots of success!
