Located on over 63K acres in the central Missouri Ozarks, Fort Leonard Wood Missouri is also known as Fort Lost in the Woods. Home to the Chemical, Engineer and Military Police Corps as well as a Basic Trainee site, FLW is named after General Leonard Wood, an Army Physician and Medal of Honor recipient. Many Soldiers are disappointed to receive an assignment here. A good hour and fifteen minutes away from shopping or “town” and two and one-half hours away from Saint Louis, FLW has the reputation of being remote and “country.” Once here, however. many fall in love with the small town vibe of Waynesville or St. Roberts, the slower pace, and the peace of mind “country” has to offer. Fancy a juicy burger and Missouri craft brew? Hop on over to Hoppers Pub (and yes, they serve frog legs too!).
Situated between The Lake of the Ozarks and the Mark Twain National Forest FLW is a place to get your hunting, fishing, as well as physical training on. This is a place for nature lovers and those who love to be outdoors. The Outdoor Recreation Center boasts canoeing trips as well as skeet shooting. Within the 63K acres, one will find Blood Land Lake, stocked and ready for your boats, kayaks and fishing poles. And if the Lake is too slow for you, hop on over to the Big Piney River. Trout lovers will have to check out Stone Mill Spring, right on post and flowing into the Big Piney.
Hikers and exercise enthusiast appreciate the Engineer Fitness Running Trial. This approximate three mile loop boasts fitness stations for you to get a good arm work out as well as legs. And fancy an adventure into the dark? Check out Miller Cave. The view from inside the cave, out across the Big Piney into the Missouri countryside is nothing short of spectacular.
So while Fort Leonard is remote, the beauty of God’s country and all that nature has to offer is here!
