Whenever I come across this photo of my grandpa Art and I, sweet memories flood my soul. Grandpa Art was my Dad's dad, and was the only grandparent I ever had the privilege of knowing. since my other grand-
parents had passed away before I was born. Grandpa Art lived in Rock Falls, about 60 miles south of our home near Kent. Grandpa would come to visit us quite often and would help Dad on the farm as much as he was able. Sometimes I would go back home with him and spend summer days at his house. Grandpa Art took me to the Hornsby's Toy Store in Rock Falls nearly every time I visited him, and he always treated me to a few toys. After trips to the toy store, I remember stopping at White Castle, picking up little square hamburgers and eating them together when we got back to his little home. Grandpa always spent the holidays with us. He would tuck
me in and read me a story on Christmas Eve while we listened to the announcer on the transistor radio giving reports as to where Santa Claus was every 30 minutes or so. I remember playing doctor with Grandpa Art,
I was the doctor and he, being the patient, had to endure some pretty wild concoctions of "medicine"! This photo of us was taken on July 2, 1967 before we left for Lena to go to Dad and Mom's 25th wedding anniversary
open house celebration. I remember the photo being taken so vividly! Grandpa's arthritis got worse as the years marched on, as did his overall health. In 1973 Grandpa moved from his home and lived with us for a
year or so, but eventually had be taken care of at a nursing home. He passed away in July 1974. I'm so grateful for all of the childhood memories that I hold dear to my heart of my very special Grandpa Art.
